BROWN GIRLS (HBO, New!) - Writer Fatimah Asghar and director Samantha Bailey's web series from Elle.com is being developed as a comedy by the pay channel. The project "centers on a queer Pakistani-American writer and a commitment-phobic Black-American musician who rely on their friendship and sisterhood as they try to rise above their lives' messiness in pursuit of their dreams." MXN's Mason Novick and Michelle Knudsen and 3 Arts Entertainment's Jermaine Johnson will also executive produce. (Deadline.com)
COWBOY BEBOP (New!) - Tomorrow Studios is developing a live-action adaptation of the cult Japanese animated series, which "follows Spike Spiegel and his rag-tag crew of bounty hunters, or Cowboys, as they try to capture the galaxy's worst criminals and survive the unexpected dangers they encounter throughout space, sometimes saving the world in the process but always leaving millions in damages." Christopher Yost is set to pen the script with Midnight Radio's Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg; Tomorrow Studios' Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements; and Matthew Weinberg also among the executive producers. (Deadline.com)
DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW (The CW) - Tala Ashe has joined the cast of the upcoming season as Zari, "a Muslim-American woman from the year 2030 who lives in a world of contradictions. Technology has brought about incredible change in her future, but human nature hasn't kept pace. Fear, prejudice and a lack of care for the planet have forced Zari to become a "gray hat hacktivist." She lives a double life and doesn't realize that she has secret, latent powers derived from an ancient, mystical source." (Deadline.com)
MISFITS (Freeform) - Ashleigh LaThrop, Tre Hall, Allie MacDonald and Jake Cannavale have been cast in the long-in-the-works drama pilot, which is based on the U.K. series about a group of twenty-somethings exposed to a mysterious chemical and subsequently develop peculiar superpowers. Lathrop will play Alicia, "a spoiled, vapid, middle-class party girl who seems to have three main goals in life: have fun, look hot and get guys"; with Hall as Curtis, "a talented and cocky football player with a promising career ahead of him who is used to everything going his way"; MacDonald as "the tough and trashy Kelly, who is street smart with a hair-trigger temper and a penchant for beating the crap out of people"; and Cannavale as Nathan, "a con artist and thief with a heavily inflated sense of his own attractiveness, intelligence and potential." Diane Ruggiero-Wright penned the pilot script with Victoria "Vic" Mahoney directing; Fake Empire's Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, original creator Howard Overman and Clerkenwell Films' Murray Ferguson executive producing; and Lis Rowinski as a co-executive producer. (Deadline.com)
PHILIP K. DICK'S ELECTRIC DREAMS (Amazon) - Essie Davis, Liam Cunningham, Ruth Bradley and executive producer Bryan Cranston are slated to appear in the "Human Is" installment of the anthology series while Annalise Basso and Maura Tierney are set for the episode "Safe and Sound."
