"How to Live with Your Parents" Opens Strong - "Modern" Is Night's #1 TV Show by 37% Over "Idol"

Gaining in each half-hour week to week in Adults 18-49 and up 21% overall for the night, ABC delivered its top-rated Wednesday since mid-January - since 1/23/13. Wednesday's #1 TV show, ABC's Modern Family outdelivered Fox's American Idol on the night by a best-ever 37% in Adults 18-49 (+1.1 rating point advantage), now beating or tying Idol on each of its last 3 originals. It was TV's top comedy debut during the official 2012-13 season, going back to NBC's The Voice-led debut of Go On in early September (on 9/11/12).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 47% currently, from 43% at the same point in 2012. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
