WILL A HOLLYWOOD MOVIE HELP SOLVE THE MOST NOTORIOUS KILLING SPREE IN TEXAS? "THE KILLING FIELDS" SATURDAY, JULY 7 (10:00 PM, ET/PT)

Since the 1970s, more than 30 young women and girls have either vanished or been murdered along a strip of land between Houston and Galveston, Texas. 48 HOURS MYSTERY correspondent Erin Moriarty has been covering the story for more than 14 years, and in this updated broadcast she looks at three of the victims whose stories were fictionalized for a 2011 Hollywood feature film. Moriarty details the case of Laura Smither, who went out jogging and never came home, as well as that of missing Krystal Baker, who has a family linage to Marilyn Monroe. Moriarty also introduces viewers to the real detectives played by Sam Worthington and Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the film "Texas Killing Fields." Just months after the film wrapped, police got a break in the Baker case. Kevin Edison Smith - picked up on a drug charge in Louisiana - was matched to Baker's murder through DNA testing. In April, 16 years after the crime took place, Smith was tried and convicted of capital murder in the death of Krystal Baker. Police are investigating if Smith has any links to other crimes in the killing fields. Police are also determined to continue to chip away at the other cases.
