PROSECUTORS SAY THEY HAVE THE WRONG MAN AFTER HE SPENDS 23 YEARS IN PRISON FOR MURDER, INVESTIGATORS FIND DOGS TORTURED AND FORCED TO FIGHT, AND A WOMAN IS MAIMED IN AN ELEVATOR DISASTER - IS IT A CRIME? - NEXT ON "BROOKLYN DA" SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2013, 9:00 PM, ET/PT

Prosecutors say they have the wrong man after he spends 23 years in prison for murder, investigators find dogs tortured and forced to fight, and a woman is maimed in an elevator disaster, on the next BROOKLYN DA to be broadcast Saturday, July 6, 2013 (9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

BROOKLYN DA is a six-part news documentary series focusing on an eclectic group of men and women in the Kings County District Attorney's Office and their lives inside and outside of the courtroom.

In the sixth broadcast, Deputy District Attorney John O'Mara and 1st Deputy Bureau Chief Taylor Koss find serious flaws in a more than two-decade-old murder case against David Ranta, who was convicted for the 1990 murder of Brooklyn rabbi. But is the wrong man in prison? Ranta served more than 20 years of a 37-year sentence for murdering Rabbi Chaskel Werzberger before O'Mara and Koss reinvestigated the case as part of a Convictions Integrity Unit. The unit was established to take a look at possible/potential mistakes by the criminal justice system and correct injustices that may have occurred. With Ranta, O'Mara says, "It's a very strong murder case, and yet when you peel back all the layers, it kind of falls apart."

Prosecutor Lawrence Oh continues working on his case in a Christmas Day elevator disaster that almost killed and maimed Debra Jordan. "My intention is to bring the horror that Debra Jordan experienced on Dec. 25 into the minds of every juror sitting in that trial," Oh says.

Meanwhile, Deputy District Attorney Dianne Malone, who heads the Animal Abuse Unit, builds a case against a Brooklyn man who had several dogs that were allegedly tortured and trained for illegal fighting. "Research has shown," Malone says, "that these are the type of crimes that are precursors to more serious crimes."

Malone, a dog owner, adds, "In these animal abuses cases, my victims can't speak, but I can tell the story of what happened to them through the observations of workers who examined the dogs... Part of me is always thinking down the road. Will this dog be able to be rehabilitated? Because if they can't be reintegrated, then they have to be euthanized."

BROOKLYN DA was created by Patti Aronofsky, who is also the senior supervising producer. Lisa Freed, Ruth Chentez, Jonathan Leach, Chris O'Connell and Kim Kennedy are the producers.
