Against Originals of NBC's "ER" and CBS' "Shark" in 10 O'clock Hour, ABC's "Notes from the Underbelly" Opens at No. 1 in Each Half-Hour in Adults 18-34

Thursday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)

Featuring clips shows for "Ugly Betty" and "Grey's Anatomy," followed by the series opening telecasts of "Notes from the Underbelly" in the 10 o'clock hour, ABC took a solid second place to CBS' original lineup in Total Viewers (9.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.7/10). In fact ABC defeated third-place NBC's original prime schedule by 2.5 million viewers and by 12% in Adults 18-49 (NBC = 7.2 million & 3.3/9). ABC delivered the No. 1 network position on Thursday with Adults 18-34 (3.4/10) and Women 18-34 (4.8/14).

Versus the same night last year when its lineup was comprised of all-original programming, ABC was up by 2.5 million viewers and by 48% in Adults 18-49 (7.2 million & 2.5/7 on 4/13/06).

"Ugly Betty" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

Opposite originals of CBS' "Survivor: Fiji" and Fox's "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?," ABC's "Ugly Betty" clip show outdrew NBC's original comedies ("My Name is Earl"/"The Office") by 11% in Total Viewers from 8:00-9:00 p.m. (8.1 million vs. 7.3 million).

Despite going up against first-run competition on the other nets, the "Betty" season recap show gained audience throughout its telecast, growing by 9% in Viewers (7.8 million to 8.5 million) and 18% among Adults 18-49 (2.2/7 to 2.6/7) from its first half-hour to its second half-hour.

"Grey's Anatomy" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

Against an original "C.S.I.," a "Grey's Anatomy" clip show delivered a strong second place in the 9 o'clock hour in Total Viewers (12.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (5.0/13). ABC topped third-place NBC's original comedies ("30 Rock"/"Andy Barker, P.I.") in the time period by 7.5 million viewers and by 92% in Adults 18-49 (NBC = 5.1 million & 2.6/7). The "Grey's" recap ranked No. 1 in the slot with Adults 18-34, outdelivering CBS' "C.S.I." by 9% (4.8/14 vs. 4.4/13).

"Notes from the Underbelly" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

Against the return of NBC's "E.R." to the time period and CBS' original episode of "Shark" in the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's back-to-back series opening telecast of "Notes from the Underbelly" ranked No. 1 in each half-hour among Adults 18-34 (3.5/11 & 3.1/10) and Women 18-34 (4.8/13 & 4.4/13).

The first telecast of "Notes from the Underbelly" at 10:00 p.m. qualifies TV's top comedy premiere since CBS' "Rules of Engagement" (on 2/5/07) in Total Viewers (9.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.9/11). Additionally, "Notes" delivered the best Women 18-34 number (4.8/13) for any comedy premiere since ABC's "Ugly Betty" (on 9/28/06), representing the second-highest-rated on television this season.

Versus the same night last year (4/14/06), the back-to-back episodes of "Notes from the Underbelly" improved the 10 o'clock time period for ABC among Total Viewers (8.5 million vs. 8.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.7/10 vs. 2.4/7).
