GSN'S First-Ever National Vocabulary Championship Takes Place March 5 in New York

Competition Will Be Held at the New York Public Library 50 High School Students From Across the U.S. Compete in Vocabulary Game for $40,000 Toward College Tuition

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 26 -- Fifty high school students, ranging in age from 14-to-18 years of age, will be traveling to New York City to compete in GSN's first-ever National Vocabulary Championship (NVC) on Monday, March 5. The winner of the NVC will receive $40,000 toward college tuition, a trophy, and bragging rights as the first-ever National Vocabulary Champion.

The National Vocabulary Championship is a new event on the scholastic landscape for high school-aged students. In that regard, it is complementary to Scripps National Spelling Bee and the Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge, in which contestants are limited to competitors aged 15 years and younger.

The 50 NVC finalists represent 26 states and hail from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Nearly 20% of the finalists are home-schooled and 62% have participated previously in state or national level academic competitions.

Launched in 2006, the NVC is an educational initiative conceived by GSN, in partnership with The Princeton Review, to emphasize the importance of language arts skills and encourage high school students to enhance their vocabularies.

The students will be competing in three rounds that test word comprehension ability. Eight of the finalists secured their place to compete in the NVC through citywide vocabulary competitions and the other 42 finalists qualified through online exams that were offered at the program's website, http://www.winwithwords.com, and regional exams administered at The Princeton Review testing sites around the country.

The finals will be held in Manhattan at the New York Public Library from 1:00 to 4:00 PM ET with several dignitaries making opening remarks, including US Deputy Secretary of Education, Ray Simon, and New York City School Chancellor, Joel Klein.

GSN will broadcast all the action as a one-hour special premiering at 8 PM ET/PT Sunday, April 15. Dylan Lane, host of GSN's original game show "Chain Reaction" will moderate the competition and host the televised special.

Profiles and photos of the 50 National Vocabulary Championship finalists, along with more information about the NVC, can be found at http://www.winwithwords.com. To request press credentials for the live event, visit GSN's corporate website at http://corp.GSN.com or http://www.winwithwords.com.
