NBC's "The Voice" Crowns Its First Winner of Popular Vocal Competition Series

NBC'S 'THE VOICE' CROWNS JAVIER COLON AS FIRST WINNER OF POPULAR VOCAL COMPETITION SERIES TONIGHT (JUNE 29)

Colon Earns Recording Contract and $100,000 Prize in Live Results Season Finale

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - June 29, 2011 - NBC's "The Voice" crowned Javier Colon as the first winner of the popular vocal competition series in tonight's (Wednesday, June 29) live results show and season finale, earning Colon the grand prize of a recording contract and $100,000.

Colon beat out three fellow finalists -- Dia Frampton, Beverly McClellan and Vicci Martinez -- each of whom performed on the June 29 finale.

Each contestant was part of a team headed by musician coaches Adam Levine (Colon), Christina Aguilera (McClelland), Cee Lo Green (Martinez) and Blake Shelton (Frampton).

The soulful pop singer's father worked at a radio station and immersed his son in music from an early age; by 13, Colon was writing his own songs. His young talent led to touring gigs and even a contract with Capitol Records, but his career never really took off. Now the devoted husband and father of two has realized his dream of pursing his musical aspirations and does not have to leave music behind to support his family. "The Voice" is an innovative vocal competition series modeled after Holland's top-rated vocal talent discovery show, "The Voice of Holland." The series is hosted by Carson Daly and features the musician coaches working through the various phases of the competition with only the most talented vocalists.

The television audience played a crucial role in determining which contestants survived as the talented hopefuls interacted with the viewers via Twitter to create a larger media imprint -- which was a decisive factor in the choices of the musician coaches.

In the finals, viewers voted to save one talent on each team, leaving the coaches to decide live who they wanted to save and who would not move on. Only one could be named "The Voice" -- and Colon will receive the grand prize of a recording contract and $100,000.
