Development Update: Friday, March 22
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

DOUBT (ABC/Sony; W: David Shore; D: Thomas Schlamme) - Carla Gugino, John Pankow and Mercedes Ruehl have all been cast in the drama pilot, about Vincent J. Calzonetti (Steve Coogan), a cunning but charming ex-cop who's now a low-rent lawyer that uses his street smarts to work the system for his clients while battling his own demons. Gugino will play his ex-wife, District Attorney Linda Chapman ("decent and honest"), who has little patience for him in the courtroom but still holds an affection in private. Pankow and Ruehl then will play Mr. & Mrs. Syd Newman, married defense attorneys who rent space from Vince and likewise are frustrated by/beholden to him. (Deadline.com)

FRIENDS WITH BETTER LIVES (CBS/20th; W: Dana Klein; D: James Burrows) - Zoe Lister-Jones ("Whitney") will round out the cast of the comedy pilot, about six 30-something friends who each think the other has it better. She'll play Kate McLean ("competitive, smart, defensive, impatient, narcissistic, tough"), the Chief Operating Officer of a thriving social media company but a mess in her dating life. Said role is in second position to her duties on the NBC comedy. Brooklyn Decker, James Van Der Beek, Kevin Connolly, Majandra Delfino, Rick Donald also star in the multi-camera project. (Deadline.com)

HOT PROPERTY (ABC Family, New!) - Michele, Sabrina and Samantha Kleier's book of the same name is being developed as a drama at the cable channel. The potential hour will center on Elizabeth Chase and her daughters, Kate and Isabel, "who live and work together but their lives are so intertwined that outsiders, including their own boyfriends, question if there is room for anything besides business and each other." Said trio are fixtures on HGTV's "Selling New York." Melissa Carter ("The Lying Game") will pen the project and executive produce alongside Richard Shepard, Sean Furst and Bryan Furst via their Olé banner. (THR.com)

AND IN OTHER NEWS... - VH1 has ordered seven additional episodes of the recently launched "The Jenny McCarthy Show" (Deadline.com); Jesse Tyler Ferguson will also guest star on the just announced "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" reunion episode of "Hot in Cleveland" (TVLine.com); Reg E. Cathey is bound for two episodes of "Grimm" as Baron Samedi, a legend of Loa lore (TVLine.com); Bethany Joy Lenz will recur on "Dexter" as the title character's new next door neighbor, "an attractive former finance executive looking for a quieter life" (TVGuide.com); and Zeljko Ivanek have booked a three-episode arc on "Banshee" as "a chain smoking, renegade FBI agent who has been tracking Rabbit for 15 years" (TVLine.com).
