HISTORY OF MUSIC (HBO; W: Terence Winter; D: Martin Scorsese) - Bobby Cannavale ("Boardwalk Empire") is in talks to star in the long-in-the-works drama, which follows two friends through 40 years in the music business, from the early days of R&B to contemporary hip-hop. He'll play Richie, "a cocaine-fueled record exec in NYC circa 1977, when punk, disco and a new form of music called hip-hop collided." Mick Jagger, Victoria Pearman, Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Rick Yorn also serve as executive producers. (Deadline.com)
THE LEFTOVERS (HBO/Warner Bros.; W: Damon Lindelof & Tom Perrotta; D: Peter Berg) - Justin Theroux (Wanderlust) is the first to be cast in the drama pilot, which asks what would happen if The Rapture actually took place and millions of people just disappeared from the Earth. He'll play chief of police Kevin Garvey, "a father of two who is trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy in a world that is starting to completely reject that notion." Ron Yerxa, Albert Berger and Sarah Aubrey also serve as executive producers on the hour, which is based on Perrotta's book of the same name. (Deadline.com)
AND IN OTHER NEWS... - Steve Agee will serve as sidekick to Diablo Cody on her TBS pilot "Me Time with Diablo Cody" (Deadline.com); Bridget Regan has booked a 10-episode arc on "White Collar" as "a beautiful rare book scholar who becomes entangled with Neal's (Matt Bomer) latest con" (Deadline.com); Elaine Ko has closed a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television where she'll be upped to supervising producer on the studio's "Modern Family" (Deadline.com); Jerry O'Connell will guest star on wife Rebecca Romijn's new drama "King & Maxwell" as "a low-rent D.C. PI who tends to be a step behind on all his cases" (EW.com); Michelle Fairley will recur on "Suits" as "a British entrepreneur who runs a successful international oil company" (EW.com); and C. Thomas Howell and Steve Howey have both landed roles on the new season of "Sons of Anarchy" (TVLine.com).
