2013 "MTV Video Music Awards" Delivers Immediate Sales, Chart and Social Spikes for Performers and Nominees

Justin Timberlake, NSYNC, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Drake, Robin Thicke And More Reap Immediate Benefit From Music's Biggest Night

New York, August 27, 2013 - Not only did the 2013 "MTV Video Music Awards" deliver big numbers on television, web, and mobile on Sunday, but music's biggest night also drove instant and immediate sales, chart and social spikes for performers and nominees including Justin Timberlake, his reunited band NSYNC, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Drake, Robin Thicke and others.

After winning the prestigious "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award," taking home three KAWS Moonmen for categories including "Video of the Year," and receiving a standing ovation for an epic medley of his hits, including a surprise reunion with his former 'NSYNC bandmates, Timberlake posted a 1,876 percent increase in sales, while 'NSYNC was up 156 percent. On the social front, according to Twitter, Justin Timberlake's performance garnered 219,800 tweets per minute, topping out at 2.9 million tweets during the show.

Both Miley Cyrus and Rob Thicke saw immediate chart and sales spikes following their "We Can't Stop/ Blurred Lines/ Give It 2 U" medley. Cyrus' forthcoming album, "Bangerz" jetted to #5 on iTunes album chart, while Thicke saw a 306% increase in sales for his single "Give It 2 U," while his album "Blurred Lines" jumped 30%. Socially, the performance fueled an astounding 306,100 tweets per minute setting a new record for tweets per minute for an entertainment event. By the end of the show, Miley had garnered 4.5 million tweets. Kendrick Lamar, who was also part of the performance, saw his VMA nominated song "Swimming Pools (Drank)" increase 215% from Saturday to Sunday, while digital sales his album "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City" increased 23%.

Lady Gaga, who kicked off the night with a thunderous debut performance of "Applause" saw the single's digital sales increase 112%. Additionally, she garnered nearly 2 million tweets during live show. Following two-time VMA winner Bruno Mars' first televised performance of his soon-to-be-released single, "Gorilla," the song immediately debuted on the iTunes single chart and is currently at #15. Additionally, the album "Unorthodox Jukebox" re-entered the iTunes album chart top 10 at #5.

Kanye West's first televised performance of "Blood on the Leaves" drove sales up an astounding 1187%, while his album "Yeezus" increased 139%. On the social front, Kanye topped out at 1 million tweets during the course of the show.

Drake also saw spikes following his first televised performance of "Started From the Bottom." Immediately following his performance, digital single sales for the song jumped 281% following the performance with Drake garnering1.6 million tweets by show's close.

Katy Perry, who closed the show with her new megahit, "Roar" from Brooklyn Bridge Park saw a 25% uptick in sales on iTunes immediately following the performance.

Artist to Watch nominee Zedd also experienced an immediate sales spike. His single "Clarity" jumped nearly 40%, while the album of the same name spiked nearly 60%.

The 2013 "MTV Video Music Awards" show ranks as cable's #1 entertainment telecast of the year among P12-34. The first-ever award show to be broadcast live from Brooklyn's Barclays Center, the VMAs garnered a total audience of 10.1 million viewers, a 66 percent increase versus 2012, and the ratings jumped 47 percent compared to last year's telecast, delivering a strong 7.8 P12-34 rating. The encore presentation of the show on MTV last night earned an additional 2.8 million total viewers, amounting to 12.9 million total viewers across both airings on MTV. Ratings for the 2013 "MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show" increased 100 percent compared to last year with P12-34, garnering a 3.6 rating among that demographic, and total viewers grew a whopping 119 percent with 4.6 million tuning in.*

The 2013 "MTV Video Music Awards" shattered previous records across MTV's web, mobile and social channels with last night now ranking as the biggest VMA day in history in terms of total visitors, page views and streams. More than 4 million fans visited VMA content on MTV.com, mobile web and MTV app yesterday generating more than 15 million total streams - five times higher than last year's show day - with the live stream portion now ranking as the biggest in Viacom's history. MTV mobile saw its biggest day ever with more than 2 million visitors, 6 million page views and 1.8 million streams. During the two-hour telecast, social media exploded as fans passionately reacted to the performances and winners generating 120 national and worldwide trending topics on twitter, and 1.2 million Instagram likes.
