LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:
Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!
CHANGES (ABC, New!) - Joshua Sternin and Jennifer Ventimilia ("Family Tools") are back in business with the Alphabet for a new single-camera comedy about "two guys whose 30-year friendship was rocked when one of them became a woman." Said effort - inspired by Ventimilia's own gender reassignment - is set up at ABC Studios, home to their overall deal. (Deadline.com)
THE COVER (The CW, New!) - Matt Michnovetz ("24") is developing a potential drama at the netlet about "a handsome young FBI agent who goes undercover in Boston with orders to infiltrate the Irish mob. Along the way, he develops a relationship with a local girl who has a secret of her own. Soon he doesn't know who to trust as the investigation goes sideways." eOne Television is behind the project, which would go straight to series if The CW signs off on the script. The company's John Morayniss and Michael Rosenberg then would presumably executive produce alongside Michnovetz and Out East Entertainment's Steven Marrs. (Deadline.com)
GALAVANT (ABC/ABC Studios; W: Dan Fogelman; D: TBA) - Vinnie Jones ("The Cape") is the first to be cast in the musical comedy pilot, about "handsome Prince Galavant and his quest for revenge over the king who stole his one true love." He'll play Gareth, "King Galahad's badass, scary Scottish henchman." Alan Menken and Glenn Slater are also on board to create the music for the project. (Deadline.com)
SALEM (WGN/Fox 21; W: Adam Simon & Brannon Braga; D: Richard Shepard) - Shane West ("Nikita") and Tamzin Merchant ("The Tudors") are the latest additions to the upcoming drama, which explores what really fueled the town's infamous witch trials and dares to uncover the dark, supernatural truth hiding behind the veil of this infamous period in American history. He'll play John Alden, "a hardened veteran of 10 years of war and captivity at the hands of the Indians who returns to his native Salem to find it consumed in Witch Hunt frenzy, led by Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel)." Merchant then is set as Anne Hale, "a talented artist who is attracted to the newly arrived John Alden, unaware of his history with Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery)." Ashley Madekwe and Xander Berkeley also star. (Deadline.com)
UNTITLED DAN SAVAGE PROJECT (ABC, New!) - Joshua Sternin and Jennifer Ventimilia ("Family Tools") have likewise sold a multi-camera comedy to the Alphabet "based on the adolescent memories of journalist/activist Dan Savage." The ABC Studios-based Di Bonaventura Television is behind the half-hour, which will explore "a contemporary family that comes together by falling apart." Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Dan McDermott, Savage and Brian Pines then will executive produce alongside writers Sternin and Ventimilia. (Deadline.com)
AND IN OTHER NEWS... - Jesse Eisenberg, Jane Krakowski and John Benjamin Hickey are all bound for "Modern Family" as "an eco-nut who is a neighbor of Mitchell and Cam," "a mean-spirited mother of a classmate of Manny" and "a therapist to a member of the Dunphy family," respectively (EW.com); Dayton Callie will guest on "Law & Order: SVU" as "a New Jersey judge who is under suspicion in a sex trafficking case" (TVLine.com); Amaury Nolasco will visit FOX's "Gang Related" as "a quiet, ruthless, terrifying sociopath who heads up a cartel" (TVLine.com); Ross Philips is set to recur on "Enlisted" as "an entitled and inexperienced 2nd Lieutenant who thinks very highly of himself" (TVLine.com); and newcomer Michael Campayno has been cast as Rolfe, "a messenger boy who is in love with Liesl until he joins the Nazis," on NBC's "The Sound of Music Live!" (Deadline.com).
