IN HONOR OF WORLD AIDS DAY, SHOWTIME(R) TO PRESENT "THE LAST ONE"

Documentary Special To Make World Premiere Monday, December 1st at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT)

Los Angeles, CA (November 20, 2014) - In honor of World AIDS Day on Monday, December 1st at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT), SHOWTIME is proud to present the World Premiere of THE LAST ONE, a documentary chronicling the history of The NAMES Project Foundation's AIDS Memorial Quilt. This moving and informative 70-minute documentary from director Nadine C. Licostie examines the Quilt's lasting legacy and present-day influence as a powerful educational tool in the on-going effort to raise awareness about the disease and the fight to end it. As current statistics reveal, 1 in 4 Americans newly infected with AIDS are under 24 years old and that more than 50,000 new infection cases occur every year in the United States alone. The AIDS Memorial Quilt remains a strikingly visible wake-up call to politicians, educators, the media and the general public that the battle to cure AIDS is not yet won.

Through archival footage, vérité scenes and interviews with Quilt founder Cleve Jones, self-described "Hand Maiden of the Quilt" Gert McMullin, as well as other early volunteers and panel makers, THE LAST ONE uncovers the birth of the Quilt and its subsequent impact on politics, science and the media. In the '80s and '90s, as the gay community was being ravaged by AIDS, families and friends of the dying fought a public battle to find treatment and understanding. The AIDS Memorial Quilt was conceived, "... as a weapon against not only the disease but the cruelty and bigotry that the disease exposed," said Jones. The Quilt serves as the largest ongoing community art project in the world, as panels representing lives lost to the disease continue to stream in. The film explores the role the Quilt continues to play as a response to a disease that, while treatable for some, still affects vulnerable communities around the globe.
