(New York) - Only the baddest and toughest can survive as homesteaders - those that quite don't fit the bill get a little help from the Raney family. Craftsman and survival expert Marty Raney, along with his skilled son and daughter, travel to the most dangerous and isolated locations across the country to help budding homesteaders become self-sufficient and reliable. After learning the necessary skills to survive in the wilderness, each family faces the ultimate decision: are they better fit for the homestead or civilization? In the last decade, two million Americans have moved away from civilization, but thousands will fail during their first winter, monsoon, or draught season. Enter the Raney family, whose mission is to aid floundering outdoorsmen and teach them the basics: growing food, finding water, creating sustainable shelter, and surviving the threat of predators. Expert builder Marty Raney, daughter and farmer, Misty Raney, and son Matt Raney, a hunter and fisherman, will use years of personal experience and skill in order to solve problems never before encountered.

Each week, the Raneys will consult with a different family of homesteading rookies to teach them how to survive and thrive the unexpected elements of the wild. Having lived without power, water, plumbing, and heat, the Raney family impart their wisdom and expertise on the newbies and have fun doing it. Nevertheless, each rescue demands concentration and skill to ensure the family and the Raneys make it out unscathed. At the end of the day, each family face faces the ultimate test: survive in the wilderness or call it quits?
