EMPIRE (FOX) - Diamond White is the latest bound for the show's final season as Lala, "a soft-spoken SoundCloud singer who sounds great online but is plagued with performance anxiety and cursed by an inability to sing in front of a crowd." (Deadline.com)
GENERATION (HBO Max, New!) - 17-year-old Zelda Barnz has scored a pilot order from the streaming service for a new comedy project. Barnz and her father, Daniel Barnz, will co-write and co-direct the half-hour with Lena Dunham and We're Not Brothers Productions' Daniel and Ben Barnz executive producing; Zelda Barnz co-executive producing; and Marissa Diaz producing. HBO Max is producing in-house. The logline is as follows: "A dark yet playful half-hour, GENERATION follows a group of high school students whose exploration of modern sexuality (devices and all) tests deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love and the nature of family in their conservative community." (Deadline.com)
HEELS (Starz) - Stephen Amell has signed on to star in the drama series, which is set in the outrageous world of independent professional wrestling. His casting has triggered an eight-episode green light from the pay channel with Mike O'Malley serving as showrunner. Amell's Jack Spade is billed as "the charismatic villain, or heel, of the Duffy Wrestling Association. In the real world, he's its hard-working owner, a husband and father trying to make ends meet while fighting to realize his impossible dreams. He has the mind of an artist in the body of a warrior and a Steve Jobs-ian need for perfection - and for control. He says he'll do whatever it takes to build the DWA into an empire. Will he go so far as to risk his marriage or his relationship with his brother?" Creator Michael Waldron and LBI Entertainment's Julie Yorn, Chris Donnelly and Patrick Walmsley will also executive produce for Lionsgate Television and Paramount Television. (Deadline.com)

PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS (Showtime) - Adan Rocha has been tapped to recur on the series as Diego Lopez, "a young, vulnerable follower of Fly Rico (Sebastian Chacon), the powerful leader of the Pachucos, a Latino "Zoot Suit" gang. (THR.com)
RIVERDALE (The CW) - Juan Riedinger has been tapped for the recurring role of Dodger, "Archie's nemesis." No other details were given. (Deadline.com)
RULES OF MAGIC, THE (HBO Max, New!) - The streaming service has opened a writers' room for a potential 10-episode drama series based on the novels "Rules of Magic" and "Practical Magic" by Alice Hoffman, previously adapted into the 1998 film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Melissa Rosenberg and Dana Baratta are spearheading the project via the former's Tall Girls Productions with Hoffman and PatMa Productions' Denise Di Novi and Nina Tassler also executive producing for Warner Bros. Television. CBS previously took a stab at a TV take in 2004 with Kim Delaney and Jeri Ryan in the lead roles; while ABC Family made another swing in 2010 that stalled in the script stage. The logline is as follows: "In this epic, generational family drama set in 1960s New York City, three troubled siblings - Franny, Jet and Vincent Owens - wrestle with "abnormalities" that have kept them isolated. But the tumultuous times unearth the extraordinary discovery that they are, in fact, descendants of a bloodline of witches. In their aspirational journey towards self-discovery and self-acceptance, they'll contend with grief, war, bigotry and dark magic, not to mention a centuries-old curse designed to keep them away from love. The two sisters, Franny and Jet, will become the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in Practical Magic, while their beloved brother, Vincent, will leave an unexpected legacy." (Deadline.com)
SEX/LIFE (Netflix, New!) - Stacy Rukeyser has scored an eight episode order from the streaming service for a new drama billed as "the story of a love triangle between a woman, her husband, and her past which takes a deliciously steamy new look at female identity and desire." The project is based on B.B. Easton's self-published memoir "44 Chapters About 4 Men" with J. Miles Dale and Larry Robins also executive producing. (Deadline.com)
