The hit series about the incredible life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria set to continue

Berlin, January 27, 2025 - Millions of fans worldwide are fascinated by the moving and dramatic story of Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz in The Empress. Today Netflix confirms the hit series has been renewed for a third and final season!

The International Emmy(R) for Best Drama Series awarded Season 1 stayed in the global Netflix Top 10 of non-English shows for five straight weeks in 2022. Last year, Season 2 made its way into the Netflix Top 10 in an incredible number of 84 countries. In 10 countries it even held the top spot, making it one of the most successful Netflix series worldwide in 2024.

"It sometimes leaves me speechless to see how many people we have been able to reach and touch all over the world with The Empress. To be able to continue and conclude this story together with our team and the unique ensemble cast is nothing less than a gift," says showrunner Katharina Eyssen. Executive producer Robert Eyssen adds: "Our aim has always been to create a series on an international level, and that, of course, continues to be our aim for the third season!"

Vice President Content DACH at Netflix, Katja Hofem looks forward to the third season: "The audience has followed Empress Elisabeth's life through happy, exciting and dramatic times in the last two seasons. How wonderful that we can continue telling this story in a third season, with the wonderful team in front of and behind the camera and with Sommerhaus as our production partner."

"At Sommerhaus it fills us with great joy that we can work together with Katharina Eyssen and Robert Eyssen as well as with the wonderful team from Netflix DACH on our series for yet another two years!" adds producer Jochen Laube of Sommerhaus Serien GmbH happily. "We owe this to the outstanding work of hundreds of passionate people in all trades. It is a great privilege to be able to go into this third season with the commitment and quality of such a great team."

Fan favorites Devrim Lingnau, Philip Froissant, Melika Foroutan and Johannes Nussbaum will return in their respective roles, with Katharina Eyssen once again acting as showrunner for the third season of the moving historical drama, creatively supported by Executive Producer Robert Eyssen. Sommerhaus Serien GmbH, led by Executive Producers Jochen Laube and Fabian Maubach, will once again be responsible for production. Scarlett Lacey returns to the third season as Executive Producer.

Synopsis The Empress (Season 1)

When rebellious Elisabeth ("Sisi") meets Franz, the young Emperor of Austria, it's love at first sight. But their ecstatic and impetuous relationship causes chaos in the dynasty and upsets the balance of power. After the wedding, the young Empress has to find her place in a totally foreign world while standing her ground against her overbearing mother-in-law Sophie who, until now, had always been the most powerful woman in the Viennese Court. Meanwhile, Elisabeth's feelings are put to the test by Maximilian, the second-in-line who lives perpetually in his brother's shadow. Hostile troops gather at the borders of the Habsburg Empire and revolution is in the air in Vienna. Elisabeth needs to learn who she can trust and the price she must pay for being the Empress and a symbol of hope for an entire nation.

Synopsis The Empress (Season 2)

The first crisis is barely over and the young couple wants to enjoy their fresh marital bliss when dark clouds gather over Schönbrunn Palace: Franz (Philip Froissant) unexpectedly faces a powerful adversary in Europe. And Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) comes under great pressure, because an heir to the throne is to secure the future of the empire as quickly as possible.

When fate strikes with all its power, the couple's love threatens to finally break apart. And Elisabeth must fight not only for her family, but also for the integrity of her soul...
