Netflix Celebrates Mexican Cinema Day by Announcing the Production of More National Films
Mexican cinema brings together stories, characters and perspectives that invite us to recognize ourselves and discover new ways of seeing the country. It is memory, identity and creativity that connect with audiences both inside and outside of Mexico. This Mexican Cinema Day, Netflix celebrates those who make it possible for our stories to reach the screen and announces a new selection of national films that will premiere soon, only on Netflix.
Following the success of Pedro Páramo, Netflix continues to explore Mexican literature and will bring Aura, the 1962 novel by Carlos Fuentes, to the screen. Fuentes is one of Mexico's most renowned and influential authors, having received numerous international awards, including the Cervantes Prize in 1987 and the Belisario Domínguez Medal of Honor in 1999. Mexican filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalacios will adapt and direct the feature film, with Stacy Perskie as producer.
Carolina Leconte, Vice President of Content for Mexico, commented: "Today, we are proud to announce the launch of new Mexican feature films that will soon be coming to Netflix. We remain committed to Mexico, our culture and our identity. Sharing the different faces of Mexico through each new production represents an opportunity to showcase the country's richness and diversity to the world."
Alongside Aura, Netflix's new selection of Mexican films brings together stories from different genres that explore the diversity, creativity and authenticity of our country:
Contra el huracán: Two half-brothers in the middle of the sea struggle to survive when an unexpected storm turns into Hurricane Otis off the coast of Acapulco. This story of fraternity, inequality and extreme courage features outstanding production values that blend digital visual effects with manual special effects and impressive sets intended to replicate the impact of a Category 5 storm on screen.
La hora de los valientes: An accident brings together a psychoanalyst and a police agent in an unexpected adventure. Starring Luis Gerardo Méndez and Memo Villegas, this comedy explores friendship, redemption, and the courage to face the unthinkable.
México 86: Steeped in satire and gallows humor, México 86 chronicles Mexico's improbable bid to host the 1986 World Cup - an audacious, against-all-odds feat made possible only by pure Mexican ingenuity. The film stars Diego Luna and is directed by Gabriel Ripstein.
Un hijo propio (Working title): Feature documentary directed by two-time Academy Awards nominee Maite Alberdi. The deep longing to become a mother and the constant pressure from those around her drive Alejandra to fake a pregnancy. What begins as a simple lie quickly spirals into a complex charade that she must sustain for months in front of her hopeful husband and family. Trapped in a consuming deception, Alejandra is pushed to cross an irreversible line, unleashing a media scandal that will shake the entire country.
In addition, the most recent - and previously announced - Rodrigo García feature film, The Follies, will be released in select theaters and on Netflix in November. The story intertwines the tales of six women who, amid self-censorship, family and social pressure, embrace their emotions and decide to free themselves. It brings together a talented cast, including Cassandra Ciangherotti, Ángeles Cruz, Natalia Solián, Naian González Norvind, Ilse Salas and Fernanda Castillo.
This August 15, Netflix invites everyone to celebrate Mexican Cinema Day by watching, sharing and discussing the stories that represent us - but above all, by recognizing those who make it possible for Mexico to be seen on screen: creators, artists, technicians and audiences who, together, keep the passion for telling and sharing stories alive.
