'Beyond Society', created by J.A. Bayona, arrives on Netflix in 2026

FEATURING THE WRITERS PIERS PAUL READ (ALIVE), PABLO VIERCI (SOCIETY OF THE SNOW) AND THE FILMMAKERS FRANK MARSHALL (ALIVE) AND J.A. BAYONA

The story of Flight 571 did not end on the day the survivors were rescued from the Andes. For them, and for the families of those who did not return, the hardest part was about to begin. Whilst silence reigned amongst those directly involved, the rest of the world continued to try to understand what had happened through books, films and documentaries. But how does one rebuild a life after such a tragedy?

Netflix presents Beyond Society, the documentary series created by J.A. Bayona and Carlos Torres, which brings together, for the first time in a single work, the survivors of the accident, the families of those who did not return, testimonies from the writers Piers Paul Read (Alive) and Pablo Vierci (Society of the snow), as well as from the filmmakers who have brought this story to the big screen, including Frank Marshall (Alive) and J.A. Bayona himself (Society of the snow).

Beyond Society is a gripping account, structured in three episodes, in which Bayona and much of the cast of Society of the snow travel to the Andes, to the very site of the crash, to facilitate a unique encounter between reality and fiction. Building on that journey, the series traces the fifty years following the tragedy, exploring with the survivors and the relatives of the deceased how that flight forever marked the lives of a community and became a phenomenon with global repercussions that inspired countless books and films.

For J.A. Bayona, "the idea for Beyond Society came about when we decided to travel to the Valley of Tears with the film's cast. None of the actors had been there before, and we felt it was the best way to bring a very important chapter of our lives to a close and to thank those who had placed their trust in us to tell their story. It was there that we realised just how closely the true story and the people who lived through the tragedy were already intertwined with the fictional characters we had created."

Beyond Society, is produced by Belén Atienza, Sandra Hermida and J.A. Bayona, created by J.A. Bayona and Carlos Torres, and directed by the latter. Netflix will release the series globally in 2026.
