HBO Max starts production of new Mexican HBO Original series 'Mataviejitas'

Mayra Hermosillo and Mónica Jiménez star in this crime thriller, directed by Humberto Hinojosa and co-directed by J.M Cravioto.

HBO Max announced today that production has begun on MATAVIEJITAS, the new HBO Original series produced by EXILE Content. The story is inspired by a real-life case that has become part of Mexico's collective memory, approached through a cinematic lens.

This psychological thriller intertwines a constant sense of danger with the intense emotional journeys of its protagonists, while portraying Mexico City in the 2000s. Through complex characters, unsettling atmospheres and tones, the series explores the contradictions and dynamics of urban life against the backdrop of a case as extraordinary as it is disturbing.

The series stars Mayra Hermosillo (Verónica Guillén) and Mónica Jiménez (Juana), who bring to life the cat-and-mouse dynamic at the heart of this intricate crime thriller. Osvaldo Sánchez (Ignacio Estrada), Natalia Solián (Inés Garay), Pablo Cruz Guerrero (Rodrigo), Carmen Beato (Olivia), Raffaella Méndez (Sabina), and Gerardo Trejoluna (Fernando Camacho) also join the cast.

MATAVIEJITAS is directed and creatively led by Humberto Hinojosa (Luis Miguel: The Series, Thursday's Widows, The Head of Joaquín Murrieta), with J.M. Cravioto (Mexican Gangster, Diablero, El Chapo) serving as co-director.

"Some stories ultimately become part of a country's collective memory. The case of Juana Barraza was one of them. I experienced it at a very particular age, and I remember the impact it had on the news, the media, and Mexico City itself. Having the opportunity now to draw inspiration from it to develop a fictional series, alongside Arturo Sampson as producer and an incredible creative team together with HBO, was both an opportunity and a challenge that was hard to pass up," said Humberto Hinojosa, director of MATAVIEJITAS.

"The talent in front of and behind the camera on MATAVIEJITAS is truly exceptional. Having Mayra Hermosillo, Mónica Jiménez, Osvaldo Sánchez, Natalia Solián, and an extraordinary cast - along with a few special surprises - takes this story to another level. They are joined by a top-tier creative and technical team, with Humberto Hinojosa and José Manuel Cravioto directing, Ximena Amann as director of photography, Sergio Barrejón as writer, and a wonderful crew who have brought all their talent to the series. We are confident that this production, with its outstanding creative, aesthetic, and technical quality, will surprise audiences and resonate especially with fans of thrillers, crime dramas, and true crime," said Arturo Sampson, executive producer of the series.

With this new locally rooted production, HBO Max reaffirms its commitment to championing authentic and powerful storytelling, created to the highest standards of quality and designed to connect with audiences both locally and internationally.
