Growing from its Week-Earlier Season Premiere, "Boston Legal" Attracts its Biggest Audience in Over a Year and its Top Adult 18-49 Rating Since October 06

Tuesday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.) With encouraging returns for the series debuts of "Cavemen" and "Carpoolers" followed by solid outings for "Dancing with the Stars the Results Show" and "Boston Legal," ABC took second place on Tuesday night in Adults 18-49 (3.6/9). ABC finished behind only Fox on the evening, which was led by another strong outing for "House" at 9:00 p.m.

"Cavemen" (8:00-8:30 p.m.)

ABC's "Cavemen" opened in the No. 1 position at 8:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49 (3.3/10-tie), Adults 18-34 (2.7/9) and key men: M18-34 (2.7/10) and M18-49 (3.1/10). The new show held second in the slot among viewers (9.0 million), trailing only CBS' time period veteran, "NCIS." "Cavemen" overshadowed its season premiere competition in the half-hour, NBC's "Singing Bee," by 2.4 million viewers and by 43% in Adults 18-49 (NBC = 6.6 million & 2.3/7). "Cavemen" opened with a bigger Adult 18-49 audience than the other high-profile 8:00 p.m. sitcom debut this season, Fox's "Back to You" (3.1/10 on 9/19/07).

Across each of the key men demos (M18-34/M18-49/M25-54), "Cavemen" generated ABC's top ratings in the time period since last November.

"Carpoolers" (8:30-9:00p.m.)

Building on its young adult lead-in, the series premiere of ABC's "Carpoolers" delivered the No. 1 position at 8:30 p.m. among Adults 18-34 (2.9/9) and Men 18-34 (2.8/9). Opposite veteran competition on the other nets in the half-hour, the new ABC comedy delivered a solid second place with Total Viewers (9.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.4/9).

Like its lead-in, "Carpoolers" was a strong draw among young men, offering ABC its top Men 18-34 (2.8/9) and Men 18-49 (3.1/9) ratings in the time period in 10 months since 11/21/06 and 12/5/06, respectively.

"Dancing with the Stars" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

In the 9 o'clock hour opposite Fox's "House," ABC's "Dancing with the Stars the Results Show" placed a competitive second in viewers and young adults. "DWTS the Results Show" beat out its unscripted competition in the time period, NBC's "Biggest Loser," by 8.2 million viewers (15.7 million vs. 7.5 million) and by 26% in Adults 18-49 (4.3/10 vs. 3.4/8). Model Albert Reed was the second celebrity to be eliminated from the ABC dance contest this season.

Boston Legal" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

Holding second to NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" at 10:00 p.m., ABC's "Boston Legal" beat out the second week of CBS' "Cane" by 1.7 million viewers (10.9 million vs. 9.2 million) and by 24% in Adults 18-49 (3.1/8 vs. 2.5/7).

Growing from its week-earlier season opener, "Boston Legal" attracted the series' biggest audience on the night in more than 1 year and its top Adult 18-49 number since last October since 9/19/06 and 10/24/06, respectively.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year to year rating comparisons: Year to year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has more than doubled from 9% at this time last year up to 20% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. Therefore, the only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
