"I Survived a Japanese Game Show" Posts Week-to-Week Increases in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, Taking Second at 9pm in the Key Adult Sales Demo

ABC News' "Primetime: The Last Lecture: A Celebration of Life" Wins at 10pm in Viewers and Across All Key Adults Demographics

Tuesday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)

ABC won Tuesday night in both Adults 18-34 (2.1/7) and Adults 18-49 (2.7/8) for the second week running. The Net also led the night in each of the key Men demographics: Men 18-34 (1.8/6), Men 18-49 (2.4/7) and Men 25-54 (2.7/8). In fact, it was the 7th time in the last 8 weeks that ABC has been No. 1 on Tuesday night across all key men demos.

* ABC outperformed its Tuesday performance on the same night last year (7/31/07) by 1.6 million viewers (7.7 million vs. 6.1 million) and by 23% in Adults 18-49 (2.7/8 vs. 2.2/7).

"Wipeout" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

ABC's "Wipeout" dominated the opening hour of primetime on Tuesday, taking the top spot in the hour in Viewers, all key Adults and Kids. The hit ABC series has ranked No. 1 in its time period in Adults 18-49 in all 6 of its telecasts to date. "Wipeout" defeated its nearest competitor in the hour by 1.2 million viewers (9.7 million vs. 8.5 million - CBS) and by 75% in Adults 18-49 (3.5/11 vs. 2.0/6 - NBC).

* "Wipeout" stood as Tuesday's No. 1 TV program for the second week in a row among Adults 18-34 (2.7/9), Men 18-34 (2.5/9) and Men 18-49 (3.2/11). "Wipeout" finished as the No. 2 television show of the evening in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, one-tenth of a rating point behind NBC's "America's Got Talent" in the key sales demo and topping the NBC show in audience share (3.5/11 vs. 3.6/10).

"I Survived a Japanese Game Show" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

Opposite stiff competition including CBS' "Big Brother" and NBC's "America's Got Talent," ABC's "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" posted week-to-week increases in both Total Viewers (5.8 million vs. 5.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.3/6 vs. 2.1/6), taking second in the hour in the key adult sales demo. The unscripted program also placed second in the 9 o'clock hour among Women 18-34 (2.3/7), Men 18-49 (2.1/6) and Men 25-54 (2.1/6).

* "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" was up over ABC's performance in the hour on the same night last year in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 (5.5 million & 2.1/6 in Adults 18-49 on 7/31/07 with an original of "Shaq's Big Challenge").

"Primetime: The Last Lecture: A Celebration of Life" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

The ABC News special "Primetime: The Last Lecture: A Celebration of Life," featuring Diane Sawyer's interview with Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch -- who passed away on 7/25/08 from pancreatic cancer -- saw the newsmagazine win the final hour of primetime in Total Viewers (7.6 million) and across all key adult demographics: Adults 18-34 (1.6/5), Adults 18-49 (2.4/7) and Adults 25-54 (2.9/8).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped from 18% at the same point in 2006-07, up to 26% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
