"The Bachelorette" (8:00-10:02 p.m.)

"The Bachelorette" posted a time period-winning performance for the 2nd week running among Adults 18-49 (2.4/7) and Adults 18-34 (2.1/7). ABC's Wednesday results were up from the same night last summer (6/18/08) by 1.3 million viewers (5.7 million vs. 4.4 million) and by 18% in Adults 18-49 (2.0/6 vs. 1.7/5).

"Wipeout" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

For the 2nd time in 3 telecasts, ABC's "Wipeout" (8.0 million) ranked No. 1 in the 8 o'clock hour among Total Viewers (8.0 million tie). Defeating its NBC unscripted competition head to head by the widest margins yet, "Wipeout" topped "I'm a Celebrity.Get Me Out of Here" by 3.9 million viewers (8.0 million vs. 4.1 million) and by 80% in Adults 18-49 (2.7/9 vs. 1.5/5).

For the 4th week in a row, the ABC unscripted series finished No. 1 in its time slot across all key Men demos (M18-34 2.1/8, M18-49 2.6/9 and M25-54 3.0/10), registering as Wednesday's No. 1 TV show among Men for the 3rd consecutive week.

"Wipeout" grew its numbers in the 8 o'clock hour week to week across the key Adult demos: +15% in Adults 18-34 (2.3/8 vs. 2.0/7), +4% in Adults 18-49 (2.7/9 vs. 2.6/9) and +3% in Adults 25-54 (+3% - 3.0/9 vs. 2.9/9).

"I Survived a Japanese Game Show" (9:00-10:01 p.m.)

Moving to a new night (shifting from Tuesdays last summer) opposite established unscripted competition during the 9 o'clock hour from Fox's second half of its 2-hour "So You Think You Can Dance," ABC's "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" delivered a second-place finish in Adults 18-49 (2.1/6). It was the evening's No. 2 TV show, behind only "Wipeout," with Men 18-49 (2.0/6) and Men 25-54 (2.3/6).

"I Survived a Japanese Game Show" improved the hour for ABC over the year-ago night (6/18/08) by 1.1 million viewers (5.4 million vs. 4.3 million) and by 24% in Adults 18-49 (2.1/6 vs. 1.7/5).

Compared to its averages last summer coming out of "Wipeout," "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" substantially increased its young adult retention to 78% in Adults 18-49 and to 83% in Adults 18-34, up from 66% and 72% in Summer '08, respectively. In fact on both Nielsen measures it was the second-best-ever audience retention for any telecast of "Japanese Game Show" out of "Wipeout."

Sunday

"ABC Premiere Event Impact - Part 1" (9:00 11:00 p.m.)

The "ABC Premiere Event Impact - Part 1" drew the Net's largest summer audience (4.7 million) with non-sports programming in the 2-hour time period in nearly 1 year - since 7/6/08. Part 1 of the ABC miniseries saw its audience build throughout the course of its telecast, growing by 21% (4.2 million to 5.1 million) from its first half-hour to its final half-hour.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 31% currently, from 25% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
