Wednesday's Broadcast Ratings: "Extant" Premiere Tops Viewers, "Big Brother" Leads Viewers

Here are the highlights of the 13 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks last night (7/9/14):

CBS (7.338 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 1.6, #1) was the network to beat on Wednesday thanks to a new "Big Brother 16" (6.111 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.9, #1), the premiere of "Extant" (9.424 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 1.7, #2) and a repeat "Criminal Minds" (6.479 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T5).

NBC (5.547 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.3, #2) then took home the silver with an encore of "America's Got Talent" (5.971 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.5, #3) followed by a new "Taxi Brooklyn" (4.700 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T8).

Next up was FOX (3.713 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.2, #3) with an original "So You Think You Can Dance" (3.713 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T5).

Meanwhile, ABC (3.773 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.0, #4) served up repeats of "The Middle" (4.176 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T8), "The Goldbergs" (3.696 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T8), "Modern Family" (3.820 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 1.3, #4), another "The Middle" (3.218 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.1, #7) and a new "Motive" (3.864 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 0.8, #11).

And finally, the special "iHeartRadio Ultimate Pool Party" (0.824 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 0.3, #12) and a repeat "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" (0.696 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 0.2, #13) on The CW (0.792 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.3, #5) closed out the night. In the netlet's target demo (women 18-34), the former delivered a 0.2 rating while the latter posted a 0.2 rating.

In late-night metered market ratings (via NBC's press release):

· In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 2.9/7; CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," 1.9/5; and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 1.5/4 with an encore.

· In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 1.1/5; "Late Show," 0.4/2; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.5/2 with an encore.

· From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.1/4 in metered-market households and a 0.3/2 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

· From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Seth Meyers" (1.2/4 in metered-market households) beat CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.0/4). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.5/3 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.3/2).

· At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.8/3 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.3/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.


Here are the highlights of the 15 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks one year ago (7/10/13):

FOX (5.264 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.1, #1) held off the competition on Wednesday thanks to new episodes of "MasterChef" (5.208 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 2.1, #3) and another "MasterChef" (5.322 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 2.2, #2).

NBC (7.305 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 1.8, #2) then had to settle for second place with a repeat of "America's Got Talent" (6.215 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.3, #6) followed by the Wednesday premiere of "America's Got Talent" (10.479 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.7, #1) and the launch of "Camp" (5.221 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.5, #5).

Next up was CBS (4.946 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.4, #3) with a new "Big Brother 15" (5.853 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 2.0, #4) followed by the season finale of "The American Baking Competition" (4.697 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.1, #7) and a repeat of "Criminal Minds" (4.288 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 1.0, #8).

Meanwhile, ABC (2.766 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 0.7, #4) offered up its mix of "The Middle" (3.337 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T10), the series finale of "Family Tools" (2.553 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 0.6, #13), "Modern Family" (2.816 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 0.9, #9), "The Neighbors" (2.240 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T10) and "The Lookout" (2.825 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T10).

And finally, repeats of "Arrow" (1.176 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.3, #T14) and "Supernatural" (0.888 million viewers, #15; adults 18-49: 0.3, #T14) on The CW (1.032 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.3, #5) closed out the night. In the netlet's target demo (women 18-34), "Arrow" delivered a 0.3 rating at 8:00/7:00c and "Supernatural" a 0.3 rating at 9:00/8:00c.
