Wednesday's Broadcast Ratings: "Empire" Rises in Latest FOX Victory

Here are the highlights of the 15 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks last night (10/21/15):

FOX (8.697 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 3.1, #1) held onto the top spot on Wednesday thanks to week-to-week gains from "Rosewood" (5.211 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 1.5, #T8) and "Empire" (12.183 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 4.8, #1).

ABC (6.025 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.8, #2) then took home the silver with its mix of "The Middle" (7.070 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 1.9, #5), "The Goldbergs" (6.463 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 2.1, #T3), "Modern Family" (7.729 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 2.7, #2), "Black-ish" (5.800 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.8, #6) and "Nashville" (4.543 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 1.1, #T12).

Next up was CBS (8.164 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.6, #3) and its trio of "Survivor: Cambodia - Second Chance" (9.027 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.1, #T3), "Criminal Minds" (8.338 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.6, #7) and "Code Black" (7.128 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.2, #11).

Meanwhile, NBC (6.401 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.3, #4) offered up originals from "The Mysteries of Laura" (6.637 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.1, #T12), "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (6.338 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.5, #T8) and "Chicago PD" (6.229 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 1.4, #10).

And finally, new episodes of "Arrow" (2.359 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.9, #14) and "Supernatural" (1.615 million viewers, #15; adults 18-49: 0.6, #15) closed out the night on The CW (1.987 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.7, #5).

· In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 0.8/4 with an encore; "Late Show," 0.4/2 with an encore; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.9/4 (delayed in New York due to local baseball coverage).

· From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.4/5 in metered-market households and a 0.4/3 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

· From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Seth Meyers" (1.1/4 in metered-market households with an encore) beat CBS's "Late Late Show" (0.9/3 with an encore). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.4/3 in 18-49 with an encore) topped "Late Late Show" (0.3/2 with an encore).

· At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.8/3 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.2/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.


Here are the highlights of the 14 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks one year ago (10/22/14):

FOX (11.127 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.9, #1) took home top honors on Wednesday with its presentation of the "World Series, Game 2" (11.127 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.9, #2).

CBS (8.753 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.1, #T2) then had to settle for second place with its lineup of "Survivor: San Juan del Sur" (9.111 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 2.2, #T5), "Criminal Minds" (9.829 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 2.4, #4) and "Stalker" (7.319 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.7, #8).

Sharing the silver was ABC (7.168 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 2.1, #T2) and its mix of "The Middle" (7.228 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 2.0, #7), "The Goldbergs" (6.982 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 2.2, #T5), "Modern Family" (9.972 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 3.3, #1), "Black-ish" (8.013 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 2.5, #3) and "Nashville" (5.405 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 1.4, #11).

Meanwhile, NBC (7.374 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.5, #4) offered up originals from "The Mysteries of Laura" (8.070 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.3, #12), "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (7.228 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.6, #9) and "Chicago PD" (6.826 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.5, #10).

And finally, a new "Arrow" (2.503 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 0.9, #13) and the return of "The 100" (1.563 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.5, #14) closed out the evening on The CW (2.033 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.7, #5). In the netlet's target demo (women 18-34), the former delivered a 0.7 rating while the latter posted a 0.2 rating.
