NEW YORK - May 15, 2024 - The landmark multiple award-winning German crime thriller BABYLON BERLIN makes its eagerly-anticipated return to North America with its first all-new season here in over four years on Tuesday, June 25 only on MHz Choice streaming service. Season 4 will launch that day with two new episodes premiering weekly through July 30. As the show's new exclusive home in the U.S., MHz Choice has been giving viewers the chance to catch up or rewatch the critically-acclaimed series by rolling out previous seasons, season 1 is now streaming in its entirety, Season 2 premiered May 7 and Season 3 will premiere May 28, available both subtitled and dubbed in English. The series was previously available on Netflix.

Based on the bestselling novels by Volker Kutscher, Babylon Berlin is the first German TV series where viewers can emotionally experience the story of the political developments leading from the Weimar Republic to the spread of National Socialism to the seeds of discontent leading up to the Nazis taking power. The series delivers an atmospheric portrayal of Berlin -- the epicenter of change in the Roaring Twenties-- as police detective Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch, Generation War), and his partner Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries, Munich) investigate complicated cases in a hotbed of crime and politics, sex and drugs, emancipation and extremism. Earlier seasons focused on a criminal case surrounding a porno ring by the Berlin Mafia, the unfolding of a conspiracy between Soviet rebels and the Black Reichswehr (a secret paramilitary group) to hijack a Soviet train rumored to be filled with Bolshevik gold, an on-set death of a famous actress, and more.

Babylon Berlin has become an international phenomenon, shown in more than 140 territories, attracting numerous accolades and critical acclaim around the world, with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its debut season, and enjoying record streaming and broadcast ratings in Germany. It has collected numerous prestigious awards, including the European Film Academy's inaugural European Achievement in Fiction Series Award, the Rose d'Or Series Award for Best Drama, a Grimme-Preis, the Bambi Award for Best Series, four German TV Awards, as well as dozens of other multiple wins and nominations.

As we last left off with the series - at the end of the Roaring Twenties, Berlin is a time of organized crime and political extremism. The old militaristic elites have not yet abdicated, while an even more dreadful monster starts flexing its muscles. It is a metropolis for those with talent and ambition, for those in a hustle. But beneath the glittering surface, the impoverished masses strive for a better life. The young Gereon finds himself caught up in dark conspiracies, while Charlotte, a bright young woman struggling to improve her family's miserable living conditions, is fighting for recognition in the male-dominated police department. All the while, dark forces gather in an attempt to bring down democracy. But at night all seems forgotten and the city still dances on the edge of the volcano as if there's no tomorrow.

The Season 4 storyline takes viewers to 1930's Berlin, where the global stock market crash marks the end of the Roaring Twenties, ushering in the Great Depression and a time of significant change as the Nazis' march to power gains momentum. Meanwhile, the series introduces us to the world of Orthodox Jews in Berlin, as a wealthy American Jewish gangster raised in Berlin returns to his old neighborhood to claim a stolen heirloom that once belonged to his father.

SEASON 4 SYNOPSIS - Babylon Berlin

It's 1930 and The Golden Twenties have culminated in the global stock market crash. Only some have profited from the crash, like industrialist Alfred Nyssen (Lars Eidinger, Irma Vep), who invests his profits and has ambitions that aim for nothing less than the whole world and beyond.

Based on Volker Kutscher's novel Goldstein, this new season traverses grand exhibition fights in the boxing clubs of the Berlin underworld, all-out dancing marathons in the Moka Efti, and the catacombs of the Red Castle (the police headquarters). Police Commissioner Gereon Rath's investigations lead him into the boxing milieu - and politically, uncomfortably close to Hitler's Sturmabteilung (SA), the "party soldiers" of the Nazi party. The Nazis' march to power is in full swing, but there are still some on the side of the rule of law.

At the same time, the fourth season offers a new perspective on the tinderbox that is Berlin. Abraham "Abe" Goldstein (Mark Ivanir, Away) has returned home from America to find a stolen jewel that once belonged to his father. The search leads him from his Jewish relatives in the Scheunenviertel to the premises of the Nyssen family. Rather incidentally, Goldstein sparks a gang war during the course of which the fabric of the underworld changes from the ground up. The journey into the night has only just begun.

Season 4 consists of 12 episodes.

Babylon Berlin is directed and written by Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries and Henk Handloegten, and written by Khyana el Bitar and Bettine von Borries. The series is produced by X Filme Creative Pool, in co-production with ARD Degeto, Sky, and Beta Film.
