'Carlota' wraps production and reveals an exclusive first behind-the-scenes look
The fiction series, filmed across multiple locations in Latin America and Europe, successfully wrapped production following an ambitious shoot that brought together outstanding creative and technical teams from multiple regions.
CARLOTA, a fiction series produced by Sony Pictures Television, has wrapped production after four months of filming across different locations in Latin America and Europe, where palaces, convents, gardens, historic streets, and specially adapted sets were used to recreate the visual universe of the period. This epic, large-scale production inspired by the life of Empress Carlota of Belgium will premiere exclusively on HBO Max.
Starring Belinda (Carlota), Jaime Lorente (Maximiliano), Miguel Ángel Silvestre (Van Der Smissen), and Mabel Cadena (Josefa), CARLOTA is inspired by the historical figure of a woman ahead of her time, whose vision of power, ambition, desire, and legacy continues to spark interest to this day.
Through a bold, contemporary, and emotional reinterpretation of her story, this original series offers a humanized perspective on the events that shaped her life and reimagines a Mexico divided by war and conflicting ideologies. With humor, audacity, and creative freedom, CARLOTA explores power, desire, betrayal, and politics from a contemporary perspective, challenging traditional historical narratives and exposing the human cost of empire. To bring this vision to life, the production assembled a renowned international cast and a top-tier creative team behind the scenes.
"CARLOTA is one of the most important projects of my career. Wrapping production leaves me with enormous gratitude toward our incredible cast and everyone who believed in this project from day one. We have poured our hearts into every scene and every detail, with the conviction of creating a production that honors the magnitude of this story and connects with audiences around the world. I take with me unforgettable memories and a deep sense of pride in what we have built together, and now the greatest reward will be for HBO Max audiences to discover Carlota, be moved by her story, and fall in love with these extraordinary characters" said Carlos Quintanilla, creator and showrunner of Carlota and VP & Head of Content and Production at Sony Pictures Television.
The series' visual approach was developed by a distinguished international creative team led by directors Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos and José Manuel Cravioto, with Carlos Bodelón heading production design and Loles García Galeán in charge of costume design. Their work, alongside the cinematography, makeup, hair, art, and set construction teams, was essential in crafting a contemporary and visually ambitious interpretation of the CARLOTA universe.
"CARLOTA reflects HBO Max's commitment to championing stories that are relevant to our local audiences, produced at a scale and quality capable of connecting with viewers around the world. It offers a fresh and contemporary reinterpretation of an iconic character through a powerful script, striking period recreation, and complex characters that will surprise audiences when it premieres on the platform," said Mariano César, SVP, HBO MAX Original Content LATAM.
As part of this announcement, HBO Max unveiled a special behind-the-scenes video offering an exclusive look at the creative process of CARLOTA. Through never-before-seen footage, the piece showcases the transformation of locations, the work of the art, costume, makeup, and production teams, as well as key moments of Belinda's characterization to bring Carlota to life.
With filming now complete, CARLOTA enters post-production as it moves toward its exclusive HBO Max premiere in 2027.
