DESCRIPTION: (from ABC's web site, March 2009) In the superficial world of high fashion, image is everything. Styles come and go, and the only constants are the super thin beauties who wear them. How can an ordinary girl from Queens possibly fit in? If you took a moment to get to know Betty Suarez, you'd see how sweet, intelligent and hard-working she is (if a bit fashion-challenged). When publishing mogul Bradford Meade handed the reigns of Mode, the bible of the fashion industry, over to his son, Daniel, he specifically hired Betty as his son's new assistant -- mostly because she was the only woman Daniel wouldn't sleep with. Both outsiders in their own way, Daniel and Betty form an unlikely team, each helping the other navigate the choppy waters of NYC's fashion scene. Everyone predicted Betty would fail. Instead, she thrived in the ultra-competitive environment. But now she faces new challenges. Diva fashionista Wilhelmina Slater, fed up with trying to earn the job of editor, has devised a new strategy -- she's engaged to marry Bradford and hopes to wrest control of the magazine that way. Will Daniel (and Betty) be able to retain their places at Mode if Willie becomes step-mommy dearest? Meanwhile, Wilhelmina (with loyal assistant Marc St. James) is planning the wedding of the millennium -- who knows who'll turn up when she takes a walk down the aisle? Betty's personal life is about to become even more complicated as former flame Henry abruptly returns to Mode in order to earn money (and get medical insurance) for his pregnant girlfriend. Can Betty stand the heartbreak of seeing the guy she really loves (but can't have) every day in the elevator? Then there's a new man on the Mode scene, Gio, the sandwich cart guy, who both irritates and fascinates Betty. In other Mode and Meade developments, sister (formerly brother) Alexis Meade is still dealing with the consequences of faking her death and getting a sex change. Claire Meade is still MIA after breaking out of prison, where she was serving time for the murder of legendary Mode editrix, Fey Sommers. Her family has no idea where she is, but she knows their every move -- and she's vowed to stop Wilhelmina from marrying Bradford. Fey may be gone, but she's not forgotten. Amanda is reeling from the revelation the fashion icon was her mother. With BFF Marc's help, she sets out to claim her rightful place in fashion society... and to find out her father's identity. Away from the office, Betty will need to help her family through the many changes they'll face, especially with family patriarch Ignacio still stranded in Mexico. Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, Eric Mabius as Daniel Meade, Tony Plana as Ignacio, Ana Ortiz as Hilda, Ashley Jensen as Christina, Becki Newton as Amanda, Mark Indelicato as Justin, Michael Urie as Marc, Judith Light as Claire Meade, Christopher Gorham as Henry Rebecca Romijn as Alexis and Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater. Freddy Rodriguez is a recurring guest star as Gio. Based on Yo Soy Betty La Fea, the groundbreaking Colombian telenovela that became an international phenomenon, Ugly Betty is from ABC Studios. This past season the series was awarded Golden Globe, Peabody, NAACP, ALMA and Imagen Awards, and earned 11 Emmy nominations, the most for any comedy series on any network. Academy Award-nominee and Emmy Award winner Salma Hayek is executive producer, along with Silvio Horta (Urban Legend), Marco Pennette (Caroline in the City), Jose Tamez (The Maldonado Miracle) and James Hayman (Joan of Arcadia). |
