THE NETWORK TELEVISION DEBUT OF THE FIRST FILM IN THE GROUNDBREAKING MOTION PICTURE TRILOGY - Based on the first of three epic novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, this 2001 film tells the story of the hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who battles the Dark Lord, Sauron (Sala Baker) to save Middle Earth from the grip of evil. Frodo and his hobbit friends, Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), form The Fellowship of the Ring, along with Gimli the Dwarf (John Rhys-Davies), Legolas the Elf (Orlando Bloom), Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and the powerful wizard, Gandalf (Ian McKellen). Together they embark on a perilous quest to rid the earth of the source of Sauron's greatest strength: the One Ring. The Fellowship's quest to destroy the Ring takes them on extraordinary adventure across the treacherous landscape of Middle Earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord. Liv Tyler and Cate Blanchett also star. Peter Jackson directed the film based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, with screenplay by Frances Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson.
