7:00 PM 2.0 DATELINE NBC
SHOW #89

Dateline examines the 50 caliber rifle, a powerful weapon that has a shooting range of over one mile. It has been used in places like Iraq to destroy equipment, not people, yet recently the "50 cal" has been used to commit crimes. Dateline looks at the debate over the 50 Cal, talking with an opponent who'd like sales of the rifle restricted, and their manufacturer, who says the 50 Cal has a legitimate sporting use. With the summer season approaching, and millions heading to the beach, correspondent Rob Stafford shows how to survive a riptide when swimming in the surf. Hoda Kotb talks to Carrie Underwood, the newest American Idol. Dateline's Chief Consumer correspondent Lea Thompson reports on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's latest crash test on frontal impact tests for several large-size cars. The models being tested this time include: Toyota Avalon Ford Five Hundred Buick LaCrosse Kia Amanti Chrysler 300 Cadillac STS Acura RL Lexus GS 300 Correspondent John Larson with the story of a daring escape by American mountain climbers who were kidnaped overseas.
