Live Telecast to be Presented for First Time in High Definition
NEW YORK -- June 20, 2005 -- NBC and performer and songwriter Mariah Carey, the most successful female artist of all time, celebrate the nation's 229th birthday during the live broadcast of the "Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks� Spectacular," Monday, July 4th, 9-10 p.m. ET. For the first time, the annual one-hour special will be broadcast in High Definition and feature just one musical performer. Carey will perform chart-topping hits from her current album on Island Def Jam, "The Emancipation of Mimi," combined with a stunning fireworks display. This marks NBC's sixth consecutive exclusive broadcast of the "Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks� Spectacular."
Carey continues to reign supreme as "The Emancipation of Mimi," now double platinum, continues to dominate in the top five on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Carey secured her place as the No.1 most successful female artist of all time when "We Belong Together" became her 16th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. This positions Carey as the only active artist in contention to surpass the Beatles (with 20 No.1's) and Elvis Presley (18 No.1's) in the modern era. "We Belong Together" also set the all-time one-week Hot 100 radio audience record with over 192 million listeners nationwide.

The country's largest Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza will feature nearly 40,000 brilliant shells exploding over New York and New Jersey set to a sweeping original medley performed by The New York Pops under the direction of the legendary Skitch Henderson. The Macy's Fireworks also will include a special salute to our nation's Armed Forces, featuring firework shells never before seen in the U.S., and a dramatic salute to the Olympic Spirit.
Robin Hall, Macy's Group Vice President of Annual and Special Events, said, "the biggest fireworks display in America is bigger still this year. Macy's is launching almost 40,000 shells, from seven different firing locations that will stretch from the United Nations to the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River, and will fill the skies over the Statue of Liberty and Liberty State park in New Jersey."
