THE COMMUNIST WITCH HUNTS OF THE 1950s COME BACK TO HAUNT ITS SURVIVORS WHEN LILLY AND THE TEAM RE-INVESTIGATE A MURDER, ON A REBROADCAST OF "COLD CASE," SUNDAY, AUG. 14

Orson Bean, Blacklisted in Real-Life by Hollywood in the 1950s, Guest Stars

"Red Glare" -- Old wounds caused by the communist witch hunts of the l950s are re-opened when Lilly and the team re-investigate an unsolved murder from 1953, on a rebroadcast of COLD CASE, Sunday, Aug. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Tim Matheson directed from a script by Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie. (Originally broadcast 11/21/04)

When an emotionally scarred son learns of his father's unsolved and brutal murder in 1953, he asks Rush and Valens to re-open the case, as he believes that his estranged mother is the killer. Lilly learns that the murdered man's life was endangered due to his association with a group of intellectuals whom the government believed were Communists. Meanwhile, Rush's younger sister, the black sheep of the family, suddenly shows up at the station asking for a place to stay.

Guest star Orson Bean plays a suspected communist sympathizer. In fact, Bean was blacklisted in the l950s for being a communist sympathizer. Although the rumors about his politics were unfounded, Mr. Bean didn't work for one year. Ed Sullivan even fired him from his popular weekly variety show until, according to Bean, "the heat was off."
