Jack's world view is challenged when his mentor, Chef Bernard (John Larroquette), arrives at Nolita with a radical, if flattering, request for Jack to feed him to death. With Steven and Seth egging him on and taking bets on his success, Jack pushes himself to create the most dazzling dishes to impress Bernard. Meanwhile, Jim gets too close for comfort to one of the ex-con dishwashers. When Jack remembers that he himself was dragged out of the gutter and that sometimes people require a guiding hand, he stops feeding Bernard.
