MINDLESS EATING, ON ABC NEWS' "20/20," FRIDAY, MAY 25
Plus: The Real Deal Is Premium Vodka Worth the Cost?
And: The Remarkable Story of Daring Rescue from a Fishing Ship in the Stormy Seas
Mindless eating are subliminal messages and not your body's hunger cues that are telling you to eat? Do people eat more when served on larger plates or drink more from wider glasses? Do the names of foods or the variety of foods offered have an effect on our consumption? Food Science Professor Brian Wansink, who runs the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, has done extensive research on this topic and has written a book entitled Mindless Eating. "Regardless of how sort-of tuned in' we believe we are to our eating habits, we are all a nation of mindless eaters. We really don't pay much attention to what we eat, or how much we eat We eat with our eyes, not with our stomach," Wansink tells John Stossel. "20/20" also conducts its own test on ABC News interns to see first-hand. The report airs on "20/20," FRIDAY, MAY 25 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. (OAD Oct. 20, 2006)
Plus: Premium vodka is all the rage these days, but do consumers really need to spend more money to get better taste? Correspondent Bill Ritter conducts an unscientific taste test to see if people's perceptions of vodka are true and the answers may be surprising. (OAD Aug. 5, 2005)
And: Rose Bard went to sea on a fishing vessel to change the pace of her life and earn money. Yet her last voyage, which ended when a horrific accident occurred during a storm, still recurs in her nightmares. The ship on which she was working, the Excellence, was a floating factory, processing fish caught by other vessels. In October 2005, it was positioned off the coast of Russia in the Bering Sea when the unthinkable happened her legs were mangled in a piece of machinery. Fighting for her life and the life of her unborn baby Rose had to put her wellbeing in the hands of a brave rescue team. "20/20" has the incredible footage of the daring Coast Guard helicopter rescue from the deck of the ship tossing on rough waters hundreds of miles from land. ABC News Correspondent Bob Brown reports on a remarkable story of romance and rescue on the stormy seas. (OAD Oct. 13, 2006)
"20/20" is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and John Stossel. David Sloan is the executive producer.
