CBS Gives Fifth Seasons to 'Amazing Race,' 'Big Brother'

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- One week after taking home the Emmy for outstanding reality/competition series, CBS has picked up "The Amazing Race" for a fifth season. In addition, the network also announced an early pickup of "Big Brother," which will return for a fifth installment next summer.
The news doesn't come as much of a surprise for both series. The Eye had previously given the producers of "Race" the go-ahead to begin casting another season of the series, which averaged 8.32 million viewers this summer. "Big Brother," which wasn't expected to hear about its fate until February, got the early pickup thanks to its stellar numbers this summer. Between its three editions (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays), the series averaged 8.8 million viewers.
