THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC, AS ONE OF THE MOST BELOVED FILMS OF ALL TIME MAKES ITS CABLE PREMIERE ON ABC FAMILY

The Complete, Unedited Film Will Premiere on April 6th

Burbank, CA -- Five-time Academy Award winner The Sound of Music will make its cable premiere as an ABC Family weekend event, Friday, April 6th (7:0011:00 PM ET/PT), with encore telecasts on Saturday, April 7th (7:00-11:00 PM ET/PT) and Sunday, April 8th (7:00-11:00 PM ET/PT). Since it first began airing on television in 1976, The Sound of Music has only appeared on broadcast networks and has never aired on pay or basic cable. The network will be airing the completely unedited version of the film.

Based on Rogers & Hammersteins award-winning musical, the film tells the story of Maria, a free spirited nun who seems to have outgrown the walls of her abbey in the Alpine city of Salzburg. She is sent to serve as governess to the seven rambunctious children of the widowed Captain von Trapp. Upon arriving at the mansion, she finds her work cut out for her -- the children are trained on whistles and stern looks, and have become mistrustful and mischievous. Gradually Maria breaks down the formidable walls and becomes a motherly figure to rely on. The process is wonderfully shown through such songs as My Favorite Things and Sixteen Going on Seventeen. Teaching the children to learn and have fun through music and the song Do-Re-Mi -- the family discovers that they possess an untapped, extraordinary singing talent. Filling the mansion with laughter, music and love, not only does Maria win the hearts of the children but also the heart of Captain von Trapp. Their stunning duet and dance to Something Good is meltingly romantic, but a dangerous reality has descended on Austria. The Nazis have taken over the country and have requested the Barons cooperation. Refusing to comply, he must find a way to lead his family safely out of the country.

The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Music, Best Director, Best Sound and Best Film Editing, and solidified Julie Andrews status as a singing and acting superstar.

The Sound of Music stars Julie Andrews as Maria, Christopher Plummer as Captain George von Trapp, Charmian Carr as Liesl von Trapp, Nicholas Hammond as Friedrich von Trapp, Heather Menzies as Louisa von Trapp, Duane Chase as Kurt von Trapp, Angela Cartwright as Brigitta von Trapp, Debbie Turner as Marta von Trapp and Kym Karath as Gretl von Trapp.

The Sound of Music was executive-produced by Richard D. Zanuck (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Road to Perdition) and Peter Levathes (Cleopatra and Somethings Got to Give), and directed by Robert Wise (Star Trek: The Motion Picture and West Side Story). It was produced by 20th Century Fox and Robert Wise Productions and distributed by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, CBS/FOX, FOX video and Magnetic Video. Writing credits are given to Ernest Lehman for the screenplay (Hello, Dolly! and West Side Story) and Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse for the book.

Distributed in over 91 million homes, ABC Family features original movies, series and specials reflecting todays families and entertaining and connecting with adults through relevant stories about todays relationships, all told with diversity, dysfunction, passion, humor and heart.
