By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

BOARDWALK EMPIRE (HBO) - Steve Buscemi ("The Sopranos") and Kelly Macdonald ("The Girl in the Cafe") are in talks to star in the Martin Scorsese-helmed pilot, which chronicles the 1920s origins of Atlantic City. Buscemi would play Nucky Johnson, "a cunning businessman who runs a liquor distribution ring at the onset of Prohibition," while Macdonald is being eyed for Margaret, "a smart Irish immigrant who married the wrong man to get out of her parents' house." Terrence Winter penned the pilot script based on the book of the same name by Nelson Johnson. Winter, Scorsese, Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson are the executive producers.

DR. OZ (Syndication) - Mindy Moore Borman ("The View," "Good Morning America") has signed on as an executive producer of the upcoming talk show, which features "The Oprah Winfrey Show" mainstay Dr. Mehmet Oz, a New York surgeon. Sony Pictures Television has already cleared the show in roughly 80% of the country, including 23 of the top 25 markets, for a fall 2009 launch. Winfrey herself is also executive producing the project via her Harpo Productions banner.

THE NO. 1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY (HBO) - Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack will both receive posthumous executive producer credits on their upcoming drama for the pay channel. The project's feature-length premiere drew almost 7.0 million viewers when it aired in March on BBC1. Production is underway in Botswana on six additional hours with Charles Sturridge and Tim Fywell directing, Timothy Bricknell producing and Richard Curtis executive producing. Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose, Desmond Dube, Lucian Msamati and Paterson Joseph star in the project, which is based on Alexander McCall-Smith's books about "the poignant and amusing adventures of Precious Ramotswe (Scott), the proprietor of the only female-owned detective agency in Botswana."
