LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

HUMANITAS/THE WORLD INSIDE (HBO, New!) - "The X-Files" alum Frank Spotnitz has booked a pair of projects at the pay channel. First up is "Humanitas," a medical drama "set in a time when major advances in medicine have created dilemmas for doctors and fanned fears that a devastating pandemic is imminent." Spotnitz penned the hour and is executive producing alongside Gavin Polone. Then there's "The World Inside," a small screen take on Robert Silverberg's famed novel "The World Inside" about "a grim vision of the future where overpopulation has run amok, and people live in carefully controlled urban centers where frustration and anger are eliminated, sex is rampant and fertility is the most prized human attribute." Said project is being co-written by Adam Rapp with the pair executive producing alongside Carolyn Strauss, Vince Gerardis and Ralph Vicinanza. Separately, Spotnitz also has a script order from FX for "Arc," a drama about a superspy who decides to leave the covert ops world to try and fit into a normal life. The drama is set up at CBS Television Studios and Tony and Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions. Former CIA agent Bazzel Baz is also attached as an executive producer.

ST. ELMO'S FIRE (ABC, New!) - Joel Schumacher is set to revisit his much-ballyhooed 1985 film about a group of recent Georgetown University grads (Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham) and their adjustment to adulthood. ABC and Sony Pictures Television have commissioned a script to an hourlong small screen take with a penalty attached should it not move forward to pilot. Dan Bucatinsky is on board to pen the adaptation and executive produce alongside Schumacher, Jamie Tarses, Gordon Kaywin and actor Topher Grace (the latter duo via their Sargent Hall Productions). It's understood the 21st century incarnation will likewise feature six friends - three boys and three girls - however full specifics weren't released.
