DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT (Lifetime; W: Shernold Edwards; D: Stephen Tolkin) - Ving Rhames ("Monday Mornings") has joined the cast of the network's small screen take on Terry McMillan's best-selling book of the same name, about irascible matriarch Viola Price (Whoopi Goldberg), who after learning that her next asthma attack is likely to kill her, sets out to fix her fractured family before she sets a foot anywhere near the grave. He'll play Viola's husband Cecil in the project, which begins production this summer. (THR.com)
HELIX (Syfy/Sony; W: Cameron Porsandeh; D: David Slade) - Jordan Hayes (House at the End of the Street) has been cast in the upcoming drama, about a team of scientists investigate a possible disease outbreak in an Arctic research facility and find themselves trying to protect the world from annihilation. She'll play Dr. Sarah Jordan, "who is excited to work for the Center for Disease Control." Also starring are Billy Campbell, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kyra Zagorsky and Mark Ghanime. (Deadline.com)
HORIZON (USA/UCP; W: Bridget Tyler; D: Yves Simoneau) - Cary Elwes ("Psych") has scored a role on the drama pilot, set at the height of World War II and revolving around a secretary at the FBI (Ruth Bradley) who begins a secretive investigation into files that have been stamped with the codename "horizon." He'll play Max Hartman, "a mysterious man who leads a double life in wartime DC." Mark Famiglietti, Meg Steedle and Taylor Handley also star. (Deadline.com)
THE STRAIN (FX/FX Productions; W: Chuck Hogan & Guillermo del Toro; D: Guillermo del Toro) - Roger Cross ("Continuum") is the latest to board the drama pilot, about the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City which is tasked with investigating a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. He'll recur as Mr. Fitzwilliams, "Palmer's (Jonathan Hyde) Head of Security, as well as, his caregiver." The show's ensemble also includes Corey Stoll, Francis Capra, Jack Kesy, John Hurt, Kevin Durand, Lauren Lee Smith, Mia Maestro, Miguel Gomez, Richard Sammel, Robert Maillet and Sean Astin. UNTITLED SARAH WATSON PROJECT (ABC/Universal; W: Sarah Watson; D: TBA) - Sarah Watson's drama - about "a woman struggling to get ahead at a Chicago law firm, while dealing with real-world attitudes towards those who are and are not married" - has found a new home at ABC. Jason Katims and Michelle Lee's Universal Television-based True Jack Productions is behind the hour, which was previously set up at FOX. Watson, Katims and Lee then will executive produce.
