CORTES (HBO, New!) - Actor Benicio Del Toro (Traffic), writer Chris Gerolmo ("The Bridge") and director Martin Scorsese ("Boardwalk Empire") are developing a new period drama at the pay channel about "the sweeping story of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, who brought down the Aztec empire; Malinche, the Mayan girl who helped him do it; and Montezuma, the Aztec leader he befriended and finally put in chains." Del Toro is on track to play the title role with Laura Bickford, Rick Yorn and Sikelia Productions' Emma Tillinger Koskoff also among the executive producers. (Deadline.com)
LUTHER (FOX, New!) - Writer Neil Cross and actor Idris Elba are looking to bring their acclaimed British series - about John Luther (Elba), "a near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind can't always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions" - to the States at FOX. Cross himself will pen the import, which has a put pilot commitment with a seven-figure penalty. Elba however will not star but executive produce alongside 20th Century Fox Television-based Chernin Entertainment's Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope and BBC Worldwide Productions' Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner.
