MOTHERLAND (Freeform) - Eliot Laurence's long-in-the-works drama has received a pilot order from the cable channel. The logline: "Set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country, the series follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into early deployment at Fort Salem. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world, but with tactics and weapons supernatural." Steve Adelson is set to direct while Gary Sanchez Productions' Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Kevin Messick also serve as executive producers. (Deadline.com)
PIPPA SMITH: GROWN-UP DETECTIVE (Freeform, New!) - Siobhan Thompson and Rebecca Drysdale are developing a half-hour comedy series at the network "that follows Pippa Smith, a twenty-something former kid sleuth, as she deals with relationships, addiction and being too dang old for the detecting game." She lost her mother a year ago and since then has strayed from her once promising path - hanging with the wrong crowd, partying... anything to distract from the pain and grief of her mother's death." (Deadline.com)
UNDERGROUND RAILROAD, THE (Amazon) - The 11-episode limited series, from Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins, has received a formal green light by the streaming service. Jenkins will helm each installment. (Deadline.com)
