"Animal Control" follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not. Joel McHale stars as Frank Shaw, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college but is still the most well-read person in the room. A former cop, Frank tried to expose corruption in his department, but his efforts got him fired, which may explain why he's so cynical and curmudgeonly. He has an almost superhuman ability to understand animals. Humans...not so much.

Bruce Springsteen performs the songs from his 1982 album "Nebraska" in an intimate soundstage setting. In keeping with the mood of the album, the stage is spare and unadorned, the black-and-white cinematography alternates between stark and shadowy, and the close quarters camerawork has a you-are-there quality. Springsteen gives a commanding performance, singing these tales of hard times and heartbreak, written as a young man forty years earlier, now with the well-earned authority of an elder artist. The film is directed by Springsteen's longtime filmic collaborator Thom Zimny.
