Netflix Unveils First Look at 'Empress of Flames', a Fresh Take on the Iconic Thai story of Vengeance for the Throne

Netflix unveils a first look at Empress of Flames, an epic reimagined by the creators of Master of the House. The iconic story returns with a fresh perspective that upends the familiar conventions and takes viewers deeper into its origins and schemes behind a ruthless battle for the throne.

In this Netflix version, the story of Empress of Flames unfolds in the Thipaya Kingdom (Muang Thip), a realm ruled by the Thipayawongse Dynasty for over 300 years - until the throne was passed to Queen Tawanthip (Khemanit Jamikorn), the feared "Demonic Queen," whose reign was marked by ruthless brutality over the regional states. Her tyranny was finally ended by King Phuka (Napasranch Mittiraroch), who overthrew her and established the Phuka Luang Dynasty. Showing mercy where others would seek blood, King Phuka spared the Thipayawongse bloodline and ushered in an era of peace and prosperity.

Eighteen years later, Buraphakham (Pakorn Chatborrirak), the eldest heir of Queen Tawanthip, leads a bloody rebellion, assassinating King Phuka before the entire court and ending the age of peace. Ananthip (Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul), King Phuka's sole surviving descendant, loses everything and is driven into exile. The disgrace transforms her from a compassionate princess into a calculating strategist, determined to restore the honor of the Phuka Luang Dynasty. Her path back to the throne is fraught with betrayal and palace conspiracy: Sekharathewi (Narilya Gulmongkolpech), a Thipayawongse heir and once‑cherished friend, becomes an implacable rival; Muang Khum (Prin Suparat), the man she loves, is her final sanctuary; and Tongnual (Amanda Obdam), a princess from the Kingdom of Meed, uses her charm and wealth as a passport to power. Stripped of her legitimacy time and again, Ananthip finally gives in to the fire within, igniting a vengeful fury ready to consume everything in her fight to reclaim the throne.

An Epic Reimagined

After the success of the hit series Master of the House, director Sivaroj Kongsakul and the team at Kantana Motion Pictures return to Netflix with a fresh vision and storytelling approach for Empress of Flames.

Sivaroj shared his vision for bringing a new perspective to the Netflix version of Empress of Flames: "I had never watched any of the previous versions of Empress of Flames before. So, for this project, I started with the original story and explored what it had to offer me. The story is driven by the characters' emotions, revealing both the course of their lives and their family relationships, all unfolding against the struggle for the throne. I was swept up in every character's tears, laughter and screams. At times, it even felt as though the story itself was teaching me about emotions and about myself. I wanted to preserve the heart and essence of the story while adding more detail and depth, particularly to the characters and their life journeys. Audiences will get to see each character's journey, along with the circumstances and motivations behind their actions. This brings a fresh dimension, blending everything together in a more nuanced and sophisticated way."

Uncovering the Roots of Revenge Through Complex Characters

Empress of Flames is a tale of revenge that escalates into a struggle for power, driven by characters with personal ambitions, grudges, and motivations of their own. Each character is portrayed as a complex human being. This allows viewers to explore their thoughts and feelings, the wounds they carry, and the forces driving their quest for revenge. A talented cast brings the intensity to life, with each actor interpreting and shaping their character to reveal that character's story and identity as fully as possible.

Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul shared how she prepared to portray the character Ananthip: "Because Ananthip is such a significant character who constantly finds herself in extreme and violent situations, I needed to do a lot of preparation for the role. I started by interpreting the role, finding new dimensions in terms of acting and participating in additional workshops. I also discussed the character's direction with the director. Viewers may have only seen her as a strong, capable, and resilient woman, but I want them to see her as a regular woman too. I want viewers to see her loneliness, the pain of her losses, and the struggles she faces, and understand why she has to stand up and fight."

Narilya Gulmongkolpech described the many dimensions of Sekharathewi: "Gentle, kind-hearted, and compassionate, Sekharathewi was raised to be a well-rounded princess. Beneath her gentle and delicate exterior, however, she is headstrong, firmly holds on to the beliefs instilled in her from a young age, and is deeply committed to what she believes is right. I did quite a bit of preparation with my acting coach and also took part in workshops with the cast. Once I started portraying the character, I discovered emotions within Sekharathewi I hadn't expected, and I used those feelings to shape her and reinterpret the story. Bringing all of these together allowed me to create a version of Sekharathewi that is different from what viewers may be familiar with - someone who is strong, steadfast, and confident in herself."

Khemanit Jamikorn also discussed Queen Tawanthip, a new character who adds another dimension to the series: "I think having this character in Empress of Flames allows viewers to explore reasons and circumstances behind the destruction, chaos, and war. Viewers will gradually discover Tawanthip's story as it unfolds throughout the series. I found Tawanthip incredibly interesting. It was a new storyline that would allow us to introduce audiences to who she really is and show the power she holds - power that puts her above everyone else. There's a certain beauty to her that is also violent, while the story reveals many other dimensions to her as well."

A World That Reflects the Characters' Roots and Identities

The production design team took great care to create an entirely new world for the series, bringing the fantasy of Empress of Flames to life. They also created a map of the series' world to establish the background of each city, including its location, way of life, the character of its people, and its distinct history. As a result, costumes vary from city to city, clearly reflecting each character's identity and origins.

Rattanarat Aurthaveekul, one of the costume designers, said: "The production design team wanted to incorporate Southeast Asian elements into the series, so we used that as a starting point to design unique personalities for each city or tribe. Combined with the fantasy element, we didn't base the costumes on any particular country. We used our imaginations to the fullest, blending Asian and Southeast Asian elements, highlighting the distinctive features, cultures, and diversity of each nation to create the costumes for the series."

The sets in Empress of Flames were also designed to tell a story in their own right. The throne room of the Thipaya Kingdom was built from scratch to reflect the story's mood. The throne's design conveys both the perspective of those seated above it and those kneeling beneath its power. The series also features scenes with a large supporting cast, helping to bring its fantasy world to life.

Get ready for an iconic Thai tale reimagined, where ambition and personal vendettas fuel an endless cycle of revenge in the battle for the throne. Empress of Flames premieres worldwide on December 3, only on Netflix.
