Tuesday's Broadcast Ratings: NBC Tops Demos, CBS Leads Viewers

Here are the highlights of the 13 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks last night (9/23/14):

NBC (11.807 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 3.6, #1) was the demo champ on night two of the 2014-15 season thanks to a two-hour "The Voice" (13.010 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 4.0, #1) and the return of "Chicago Fire" (9.403 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 2.7, #3).

CBS (15.252 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.4, #2) then claimed the silver with its premiere lineup of "NCIS" (17.993 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.9, #2), "NCIS: New Orleans" (17.093 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.5, #4) and "Person of Interest" (10.669 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.8, #6).

Next up was ABC (7.221 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.8, #3) with a special "Dancing with the Stars" (9.603 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.6, #8) results show followed by the season premiere of "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" (5.574 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 1.9, #5) and the time period launch of "Forever" (6.486 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.7, #7).

Meanwhile, FOX (2.072 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.0, #4) served up its trio of "Utopia" (1.936 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 0.8, #11), "New Girl" (2.320 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.3, #9) and "The Mindy Project" (2.099 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 1.0, #10).

And finally, repeats of "Arrow" (0.697 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 0.3, #T12) and "Supernatural" (0.655 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 0.3, #T12) on The CW (0.676 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.3, #5) closed out the night. In the netlet's target demo (women 18-34), "Arrow" delivered a 0.3 rating while "Supernatural" posted a 0.3 rating.

· In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 2.8/7; CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," 2.6/7; and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 1.9/5.

· In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 1.0/5; "Late Show," 0.5/2; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.6/3.

· From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.3/4 in metered-market households and a 0.4/2 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

· From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Seth Meyers" (1.3/5 in metered-market households) beat CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.2/5). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.5/3 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.3/2).

· At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.8/4 in metered-market households and a 0.3/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.


Here are the highlights of the 15 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks one year ago (9/24/13):

NBC (12.509 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 4.0, #1) snagged the demo crown on Tuesday with night two of "The Voice" (14.137 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 4.6, #T1) followed by the return of "Chicago Fire" (9.254 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 2.8, #6) - a series high.

CBS (15.979 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.9, #T2) then was the most-watched network thanks to the season premieres of "NCIS" (19.475 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 3.4, #3) - its lowest rated premiere in six years, "NCIS: Los Angeles" (16.174 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 3.0, #5) - its lowest-rated premiere ever - and "Person of Interest" (12.288 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 2.3, #T7) - a series low (and is the show's lowest-rated premiere ever).

Next up was ABC (8.107 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 2.9, #T2) with its night of premieres - "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" (11.890 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 4.6, #T1) - its highest rated drama debut in nearly 4 years ("V"), "The Goldbergs" (9.107 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 3.2, #4), "Trophy Wife" (6.610 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 2.3, #T7) and "Lucky 7" (4.572 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.3, #13) - the lowest rated fall drama premiere in ABC history.

Meanwhile, FOX (3.696 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.7, #4) offered up its second weeks of "Dads" (3.654 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 1.5, #T11), "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" (4.000 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.8, #10), "New Girl" (4.096 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 2.1, #9) and "The Mindy Project" (3.034 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 1.5, #T11).

And finally, the season finale of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" (1.354 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.5, #14) lead into a repeat of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" (1.274 million viewers, #15; adults 18-49: 0.4, #15) and the penultimate "Capture" (0.721 million viewers, #16; adults 18-49: 0.2, #16) on The CW (1.017 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.4, #5). In the netlet's target demo (women 18-34), "Line" delivered a 0.5 and a 0.5 rating at 8:00/7:00c and "Capture" a 0.2 rating at 9:00/8:00c.

For the first time in eight years, NBC has won Tuesday of premiere week in 18-49 among the Big 4 networks and has now won the opening two nights of the season with entertainment programming for the first time in the history of People Meters (dating back to September 1987).

·In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 2.5/7; CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," 3.2/9; and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 2.0/6.

·In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 0.8/4; "Late Show," 0.6/3; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.8/4.

·From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.4/5 in metered-market households and a 0.6/4 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

·From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (1.4/5 in metered-market households) trailed CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.5/6). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.5/4 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.2/4).

·At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.9/4 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.3/3 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.
