DESCRIPTION:
(from A&E's press release, June 2026) Inside America's jails, every second counts - and every second is captured on camera. BEHIND BARS: OFFICER CAM takes viewers inside two of the country's most pressurized correctional facilities, where sheriffs equip every officer with body-worn cameras to transform how their jails operate. Through raw, first-hand footage, the series reveals what it takes to run a modern American jail. Once viewed primarily as tools of oversight, bodycams have become catalysts for change - driving smarter training, stronger decision-making, and safer outcomes for officers and inmates alike. At Clayton County Jail outside Atlanta, Georgia, staffing shortages, limited resources, and a high-risk inmate population create constant pressure. With 57% of inmates classified as maximum security, Sheriff Levon Allen relies on bodycams to document critical incidents, improve performance, strengthen tactics, and prevent future tragedies. At Wood County Jail in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, where half the inmate population faces drug-related charges, deputies navigate the daily challenges of addiction, withdrawal, and unpredictable behavior. Sheriff Shawn Becker uses bodycam footage to guide training, shape policy, and better prepare officers for the realities they face.
