THE MOUNTAIN (NBC, New!) - Muse Entertainment is set to team with the Peacock for a two-hour backdoor pilot about "a single mom with three kids who inherits a property from a supposedly dead uncle [where] they discover a treasure trove of history." Doug Barr wrote and will direct the Canadian co-production, which is set to begin filming in Montreal and Magog, Quebec next month. Barr will also executive produce alongside Michael Prupas and Jeff Grant with Joel Rice and Irene Litensky producing.
SOUTHLAND (NBC) - Clifton Collins ("Star Trek") has joined the cast of the show's second season. He'll play Ray Suarez, a character who is still being fleshed out by producers. His addition is designed to fill the void left by Amaury Nolasco, who has departed the series after filming three episodes. No reason was given for either development.
UNTITLED MIKE MARKOWITZ PROJECT (FOX, New!) - Mike Markowitz ("It's All Relative") has landed a pilot presentation order from the network for a new half-hour which is described only as a "medical comedy." The project is set up at the Warner Bros. Television-based Bad Robot Productions. The company's J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk then will serve as executive producers alongside Markowitz.
UNTITLED BROADWAY MUSICAL PROJECT (Showtime, New!) - Steven Spielberg ("United States of Tara") is back in business with the pay channel, this time for a new drama which will chronicle the development of an original Broadway musical, one which will ultimately be released on the real stage. Storyline Entertainment's Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are in talks to executive produce the drama as are musical veterans Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Spielberg then will executive produce alongside DreamWorks Television principals Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. Said project, which could be an hour or half-hour, is still in the early stages of development as the team is now in the process of meeting with writers. As for specifics, the series "will offer a behind-the-scenes look at every aspect of launching a tuner, from penning the songs to recruiting investors," while a new musical being churned out after each respective season.
