LOS ANGELES, CA (October 6, 2026) - Lifetime greenlights the new Ripped from the Headlines original movie She Married Her Murderer: The Susan Cox Powell Story, starring Ricki Lake (Hairspray, Ricki Lake) as Susan's mother Judy Cox and Mike Dopud (Power, Deadpool 2) as her father Chuck Cox and Matreya Scarrwener (Husband, Father, Killer & Fakes) as Susan. Based on the tragic true story of a young Utah mother whose disappearance captivated the nation, the film follows Susan's parents as they fight for their grandchildren and turn their grief into action, advocating for stronger protections for children in custody cases involving domestic violence.
Executive produced by Kara Feifer and Elisabeth Rohm of Rohm Feifer Entertainment, the film marks Rohm's return to directing for Lifetime. Rohm, who has directed numerous films for the network including Girl in the Basement, The Dating App Killer and Husband, Father, Killer which reunites her with Scarrwener whom she directed prior. She Married Her Murderer: The Susan Cox Powell Story will debut in early 2027.
The movie follows Susan Cox Powell (Matreya Scarrwener), a young mother trapped in a controlling and abusive marriage who vanishes without a trace. As her parents, Judy (Ricki Lake) and Chuck (Mike Dopud), launch a search, cameras swarm the neighborhood and Susan's husband, Josh (Jonathan Whitesell), claims he was camping with their two sons. But when his story doesn't add up, and disturbing secrets soon emerge, including his father Steve's unsettling obsession with Susan. After Chuck and Judy fight to gain custody of their grandsons, Josh's court-ordered visit with the boys turns tragic. In the aftermath, Chuck and Judy turn their unimaginable grief into advocacy through the Susan Cox Powell Foundation, supporting families of missing loved ones, raising awareness about domestic abuse, and advocating for stronger protections for victims and their children.
She Married Her Murderer: The Susan Cox Powell Story is produced by Bruce Harvey for CMW Autumn Productions Inc. in association with Studio TF1 America Inc. and Rohm Feifer Entertainment. Kara Feifer, Elisabeth Rohm, Timothy O. Johnson and Meghan Hooper White serve as executive producers. The film is directed by Rohm from a script by Waneta Storms.
