Thursday's Broadcast Ratings: Comedies Return on Top for CBS

Here are the highlights of the 15 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks last night (1/5/17):

CBS (8.689 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 1.7, #1) was the top draw on the first Thursday of 2017 with its mix of "The Big Bang Theory" (16.663 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 3.6, #1), "The Great Indoors" (9.674 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.9, #2), "Mom" (8.459 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.7, #3), "Life in Pieces" (6.707 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.4, #5) and "Pure Genius" (5.317 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 0.8, #13).

ABC (6.348 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.4, #2) then was the silver draw with the penultimate week of "The Great Holiday Baking Show" (5.015 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T10) and the two-hour special "Truth and Lies: The Menendez Brothers" (7.015 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.6, #4).

Next up was FOX (3.572 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.2, #3) with its relocated "Hell's Kitchen" (3.680 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T6) followed by a second "Hell's Kitchen" (3.464 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 1.1, #9).

Meanwhile, NBC (5.135 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.1, #4) offered up the return of "Superstore" (4.455 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T6), "The Good Place" (3.554 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T10), "Chicago Med" (6.219 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T6) and "The Blacklist" (5.183 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T10).

And finally, repeats of "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" (1.027 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.3, #14) and "Supernatural" (0.802 million viewers, #15; adults 18-49: 0.2, #15) on The CW (0.915 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.3, #5) closed out the night.

· In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 0.6/3 with an encore; "Late Show," 0.4/2; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.7/4.

· From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.5/5 in metered-market households and a 0.4/3 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

· From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, ratings were: "Late Night with Seth Meyers," 1.1/4 in metered-market households with an encore; CBS's "Late Late Show," 1.1/4. In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, averages were: "Late Night," 0.3/2 in 18-49 with an encore; "Late Late Show," 0.3/2.

· At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.7/3 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.2/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.


Here are the highlights of the 15 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks one year ago (1/7/16):

FOX (9.993 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.6, #1) staked claim to the top spot on Thursday with new episodes of "American Idol" (9.531 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 2.4, #3) and another "American Idol" (10.456 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.9, #2).

CBS (9.229 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.0, #2) then had to settle for second place with originals from "The Big Bang Theory" (15.725 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 3.8, #1), "Life in Pieces" (9.441 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 2.2, #4), "Mom" (8.755 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.8, #T5), newcomer "Angel from Hell" (8.043 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.6, #T7) and "Elementary" (6.707 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.2, #9).

Next up was NBC (6.583 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.5, #3) with fresh installments of "Heroes Reborn" (3.729 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T10), "The Blacklist" (7.450 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 1.6, #T7) and the debut of "Shades of Blue" (8.571 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 1.8, #T5).

Meanwhile, ABC (3.036 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 0.8, #4) offered up the formal return of "Beyond the Tank" (4.290 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 1.0, #T10) alongside the launch of "My Diet Is Better Than Yours" (2.461 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T12) and a second "My Diet Is Better Than Yours" (2.359 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T12).

And finally, repeats of the Friday-bound "The Vampire Diaries" (0.747 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.2, #T14) and "The Originals" (0.511 million viewers, #15; adults 18-49: 0.2, #T14) on The CW (0.629 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.2, #5) closed out the night.
