World Book Day: Netflix Announces New TV Adaptations and Impact on Book Sales As Sweet Magnolias is Renewed for Season Five

Plus a look ahead at exciting adaptations to come in 2025

Have you ever been so immersed in a book you could feel it unfolding all around you? That's the power of a great story. In the words of Jinny Howe, Vice President of Drama, Netflix, "At Netflix, we love when stories transcend the page and light up the screen, allowing fans to experience beloved stories in new and exciting ways. The impact of these adaptations can be so powerful that it not only captivates new audiences around the world, it also causes a resurgence in popularity for the original source material, with many books returning to bestseller lists many years after their initial release."

Today, in honor of World Book Day, we're announcing two new shows and the renewal of a fan favorite, an update on how Netflix adaptations have positively impacted recent book sales, and a look ahead at some of our most exciting adaptations to come. Happy reading!

The Age of Innocence

· Announcing a limited-series adaptation of Edith Wharton's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of forbidden love in 19th century New York.

· The Age Of Innocence is a passionate and heart-rending will-they/won't-they love triangle exploring themes of freedom, duty, identity and love in all its forms. This fresh take is true to Wharton's novel but will speak to a new generation as we traverse the ballrooms and bedrooms of these young people, asking the question what is love - and what is lust? And should we ultimately be driven by our heads or by our hearts?

· From Showrunner/Writer/Executive Producer Emma Frost (The White Queen, Shameless).

Unaccustomed Earth

· Announcing the new drama series, Unaccustomed Earth, based on Jhumpa Lahiri's internationally beloved and award-winning collection of short stories.

· Unaccustomed Earth is an epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, desire, and belonging. Rich with nuance, passion and unforgettable characters, the eight-episode drama invites you into the elite and insular Indian-American community of Cambridge, MA. When a star-crossed romance between a devoted wife and her long-lost love comes to light, a scandalous affair is born and new battle lines are drawn in this intensely inter-connected immigrant community.

· From Showrunner/Writer/Executive Producer John Wells (The Pitt, Shameless); Writer/Executive Producer Madhuri Shekar (3 Body Problem, The Nevers); Director/Executive Producer Nisha Ganatra (Freakier Friday, Late Night) will direct the first episode.

Sweet Magnolias

· Based on the popular book series by New York Times best-selling author Sherryl Woods, Netflix today announced that Sweet Magnolias has been renewed for a fifth season. The fan-beloved comfort drama continuously ranks among Netflix's Global Top 10 list in over 60 countries. Sweet Magnolias follows lifelong best friends Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley) as they juggle relationships, family, and careers in the charming small town of Serenity, SC.

· Sheryl J. Anderson (Ties That Bind) returns as showrunner and executive producer; Dan Paulson (Chesapeake Shores), whose Daniel L. Paulson Productions is producing, also returns as an executive producer. Matt Drake (Chesapeake Shores) will serve as an executive producer. Norman Buckley serves as co-executive producer.
